Power-Law Distributions in a Two-Sided Market and Net Neutrality

چکیده
“Net neutrality” often refers to the policy dictating that an Internet service provider (ISP) cannot charge content providers (CPs) for delivering their content to consumers. Many past quantitative models designed to determine whether net neutrality is a good idea have been rather equivocal in their conclusions. Here we propose a very simple twosided market model, in which the types of the consumers and the CPs are power-law distributed — a kind of distribution known to often arise precisely in connection with Internet-related phenomena. We derive mostly analytical, closed-form results for several regimes: (a) Net neutrality, (b) social optimum, (c) maximum revenue by the ISP, or (d) maximum ISP revenue under quality differentiation. One unexpected conclusion is that (a) and (b) will differ significantly, unless average CP productivity is very high.

Price Discrimination and the Hold-Up Problem: A Contribution to the Net-Neutrality Debate
This paper studies ex-ante investment incentives of a buyer (a content provider) facing a monopoly input seller (an internet service provider), who employs second-degree price discrimination. As a benchmark, we extend an adverse-selection model by a noncontractible investment stage, which allows the buyer to improve her type. The buyer underinvests due to partial rent extraction by the seller. ...

In this paper, a new family of distributions with many applications in financial engineering have been introduced. This distribution contains important statistical distributions such as the triangular, exponential and uniform distribution. متن کاملA Two-Sided Market Analysis of Provider Investment Incentives With an Application to the Net-Neutrality Issue.∗
We address whether providers of last-mile access (local ISPs) to end users should be allowed to charge content providers, who derive advertising revenue, for the right to access end users. This question is part of the larger debate on network neutrality. We compare two-sided pricing where these charges are allowed to one-sided pricing where such charges are prohibited by possible network neutra...
متن کاملEquilibria of Prices and Investments in Two-sided Internet Content Delivery Market
The Internet content delivery market has been positioned for tremendous growth. To capture the essentials of pricing structures in this market, we develop an economic model incorporating prices with provider investments in the demand function, and obtain equilibrium prices and investments under both monopoly and competitive settings for transport providers. We also investigate network neutralit...
متن کاملNetwork Platform Competition in a Two-Sided Market: Implications to the Net Neutrality Issue
We consider a model for network platform competition between the current “Best Effort” (BE) network and a hypothetical “Next Generation Network” (NGN). We suppose there are indirect network externalities between content providers (CPs) and users of each platform. Moreover, we suppose that NGN users can access BE content, thus there is a cross-platform, indirect network externality. This feature...
