Chemical Abundances of Planetary Nebulae in the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spectrophotometry and imaging of the two planetary nebulae He 2-436 and Wray 16423, recently discovered to be in the Sagittarius dwarf elliptical galaxy, are presented. Wray 16-423 is a high excitation planetary nebula (PN) with a hot central star. In contrast He 2-436 is a high density nebula with a cooler central star and evidence of local dust, the extinction exceeding that for Wray 16-423 by EB−V = 0.28. The extinction to Wray 16-423, (EB−V =0.14) is consistent with the line of sight extinction to the Sagittarius Dwarf. Both PN show Wolf-Rayet features in their spectra, although the lines are weak in Wray 16-423. Images in [O III] and Hα+[N II], although affected by poor seeing, yield a diameter of 1.2 for Wray 16-423 after deconvolution, whilst He 2-436 was unresolved. He 2-436 has a luminosity about twice that of Wray 16-423 Based on observations at the European Southern Observatory, La Silla

متن کاملTwo Planetary Nebulae in the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy
Two planetary nebulae are shown to belong to the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, on the basis of their radial velocities. This is only the second dwarf spheroidal galaxy, after Fornax, found to contain planetary nebulae. Their existence connrms that this galaxy is at least as massive as the Fornax dwarf spheroidal which has a single planetary nebula, and suggests a mass of a few times 10 7 M. The two...
متن کاملThe exotic chemical composition of the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal galaxy
Context. The Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy is the nearest neighbor of the Milky Way. Moving along a short period quasi-polar orbit within the Halo, it is being destroyed by the tidal interaction with our Galaxy, losing its stellar content along a huge stellar stream. Aims. We study the detailed chemical composition of 12 giant stars in the Sagittarius dwarf Spheroidal main body, together ...
متن کاملPlanetary Nebulae in the Andromeda Galaxy and Its Companions
The identification and observation of planetary nebulae in the Andromeda galaxy (M3I) and its companions provide a powerful means of studying their old stellar populations. The direct determination of chemical abundances and radial velocities for even the brightest individual old stars is impossible at the distance of M31. The strongest emission lines of planetary nebulae are as bright as the e...
