چکیده
Carica papaya (pawpaw) is an economically important fruit of the tropics and subtropics. The fruit and leaves of pawpaw contain proteins and alkaloids of potential important medicinal, industrial and pharmaceutical applications; these include antimicrobial, anthelmintic and antifertility effects. These effects are attributed to many biologically active compounds of C papaya; Benzyl isothiocyanate and Papain are responsible for the anthelmintic activity and Oleanolic glycoside have the antifertility activity. Anthelmintic results of papaya indicate high efficacy against Ascaris suum while antifertility effects have been demonstrated in various species, including the primates. In the tropics Carica papaya fruits are available all year round and are a significant dietary component of humans as fresh fruits and/or, vegetable or processed products. The remains in hotels and surplus in homes containing the papaya seeds are usually fed to livestock because of the perceived nutritional and medicinal values with no regard to the possible negative effects on reproduction of these animals. Since the pig is usually fed on swirl, most of which contains the

Antispermatogenic Effect of Carica Papaya Seed Extract on Steroidogenesis in Albino Rats
Steroidogenesis plays a key role in the development and maintenance of male reproductive function and fertility. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of Carica papaya seed extract on steroidogenesis. The reduced cholesterol levels indicate decreased mobilization towards androgenesis which leads to decreased steroidogenesis and thereby inhibition of spermatogenesis in...
متن کاملPapaya (Carica papaya) consumption is unsafe in pregnancy: fact or fable? Scientific evaluation of a common belief in some parts of Asia using a rat model.
Using controlled in vivo and in vitro pharmacological methods, we evaluated the safety of papaya (Carica papaya) consumption in pregnancy with reference to its common avoidance during pregnancy in some parts of Asia. Ripe papaya (Carica papaya L. (Caricaecae) blend (500 ml/l water) was freely given to four groups of Sprague-Dawley rats at different stages of gestation (days 1-5, 6-11, 12-17 and...
متن کاملCarica Papaya as a Source of Natural Medicine and Its Utilization in Selected Pharmacetical Applications
This paper aims at reviewing Carica papaya as potential natural medicinal source. Several studies on methods used in extracting Carica papaya materials from different parts of the plant were highlighted. Extracts from different parts of Carica papaya plant have shown protective effects against many diseases such as intestinal worms infection and different types of wounds. Extracts also showed p...
متن کاملEffect of papaya (Carica papaya linn) on pregnancy and estrous cycle in albino rats of Wistar strain.
The antifertility effects of Carica papaya were investigated by feeding adult cycling and pregnant rats with different components of its fruits. No attempt was made to force-feed the animals. The results indicate that unripe fruits of papaya interrupt estrous cycle and induce abortions. The abortifacient property seems to decrease as the fruit becomes stale or ripe. Exogenous progesterone count...
متن کاملNeuroprotective and nootropic activity of Carica papaya seeds on Diabetes induced cognitive decline in rats
The aim of present study is to investigate neuroprotective and nootropic activity of Petroleum Ether Extract of Carica papaya seeds (PEECPS) on diabetic induced cognitive decline rats. Rectangular maze and morris water maze models were used to evaluate nootropic activity and neuroprotective effects were studied by estimating acetyl cholinesterase (AchE), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismut...
