The Observed Relation between Stellar Mass, Dust Extinction and Star Formation Rate in Local Galaxies

چکیده
In this study we investigate the relation between stellar mass, dust extinction and star formation rate (SFR) using ∼ 150, 000 star-forming galaxies from the SDSS DR7. We show that the relation between dust extinction and SFR changes with stellar mass. For galaxies at the same stellar mass dust extinction is anti-correlated with the SFR at stellar masses < 10M⊙. There is a sharp transition in the relation at a stellar mass of 10M⊙. At larger stellar masses dust extinction is positively correlated with the SFR for galaxies at the same stellar mass. The observed relation between stellar mass, dust extinction and SFR presented in this study helps to confirm similar trends observed in the relation between stellar mass, metallicity and SFR. The relation reported in this study provides important new constraints on the physical processes governing the chemical evolution of galaxies. The correlation between SFR and dust extinction for galaxies with stellar masses > 10M⊙ is shown to extend to the population of quiescent galaxies suggesting that the physical processes responsible for the observed relation between stellar mass, dust extinction and SFR may be related to the processes leading to the shut down of star formation in galaxies. The Slow Flow Model of Dust Efflux in Local Star-Forming Galaxies
We develop a dust efflux model of radiation pressure acting on dust grains which successfully reproduces the relation between stellar mass, dust opacity and SFR observed in local star-forming galaxies. The dust content of local star-forming galaxies is set by the competition between the physical processes of dust production and dust loss in our model. The dust loss rate is proportional to the d...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

We present first results of a study aimed to constrain the star formation rate and dust content of galaxies at z≈2. We use a sample of BzK-selected star-forming galaxies, drawn from the COSMOS survey, to perform a stacking analysis of their 1.4 GHz radio continuum as a function of different stellar population properties, after removing AGN contaminants from the sample. Dust unbiased star format...

We investigate the relationships between stellar mass, gas-phase oxygen abundance (metallicity), star formation rate, and dust content of star-forming galaxies at z∼1.6 using Subaru/FMOS spectroscopy in the COSMOS field. The mass-metallicity relation at z ∼ 1.6 is steeper than the relation observed in the local Universe. The steeper MZ relation at z ∼ 1.6 is mainly due to evolution in the stell...

We present an analysis of the integrated properties of the stellar populations in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey of Hα-selected galaxies. In this paper, the first of a series, we describe in detail the techniques developed to model star-forming galaxies using a mixture of stellar populations, and taking into account the observational uncertainties. We assume a recent burst o...
