Running head: PSEUDOTUMORS IN ASSOCIATION WITH HIP PROSTHESES 1 PSEUDOTUMORS IN ASSOCIATION WITH HIP PROSTHESES: A LITERTURE REVIEW WITH CASE STUDIES November 13, 2013 PSEUDOTUMORS IN ASSOCIATION WITH HIP PROSTHESES

چکیده

With the exhibit of pseudotumor discoveries around hip replacements, the search for the cause of such abnormal masses has become a topic of great interest. Possible areas of causation include metal-on-metal hip replacements compared to metal-on-polyethylene hip replacements, patient hypersensitivity to prosthesis debris, or even prosthesis surgical position has been investigated. Although more research should be done, hypersensitivity seems to be the direction most studies are suggesting. However, more research must be done to ascertain the true reason behind the development of pseudotumors. PSEUDOTUMORS IN ASSOCIATION WITH HIP PROSTHESES 3

Pseudotumors in association with well-functioning metal-on-metal hip prostheses: a case-control study using three-dimensional computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

INTRODUCTION Many papers have been published recently on the subject of pseudotumors surrounding metal-on-metal hip resurfacing and replacement prostheses. These pseudotumors are sterile, inflammatory lesions within the periprosthetic tissues and have been variously termed masses, cysts, bursae, collections, or aseptic lymphocyte-dominated vasculitis-associated lesions (ALVAL). The prevalence o...

The correlation of wear with histological features after failed hip resurfacing arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND Tissue necrosis and a macrophage and perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate are commonly seen in periprosthetic tissues around metal-on-metal hip resurfacing implants, including pseudotumors associated with these implants. The purpose of the present study was to correlate pathological changes in periprosthetic tissues with clinical findings and the amount of implant-derived metal wear. ...

Magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of hip arthroplasty complications

Radiol Bras. 2015 Set/Out;48(5):VII Hip arthroplasty represents one of the greatest technological developments of the modern medicine that is beneficial to a wide range of patients. However, like every surgery, it is subjected to a series of complications, some of them easily and other not so easily recognizable, as in the case of inflammatory pseudotumor. Pseudotumors may be found in cases of ...

Cross sectional imaging of metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) MRI is widely advocated for surveillance of metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties (MOM-HAs). However, its use is limited by susceptibility artifact at the prosthesis-bone interface, local availability, patient compliance, and cost (Hayter et al. 2011a). We wanted to determine whether CT is a suitable substitute for MARS MRI in evaluati...
