T h e theory of ideo-motor action has been for a generation one of the stock ”laws” of orthodox psychology. It is taught as almost axiomatic in standard treatises-is made the explanatory principle for phenomena of suggestion, hypnotism, obsessions and the like-and is used as the basis for recommended practices in education, psychiatry, religion-even in salesmanship and advertising. In spite of contrary evidence brought forward by Kirkpatrick, Woodworth, Burnett, and others, probably nine out of ten of the members of this association believe, or think that they believe, in one or another form of this doctrine that an idea tends to produce the act which it represents or resembles or is ”an idea of,” or ”has as its object.” Against this most respectable doctrine I early rebelled, and I somewhat greedily seize this occasion, which requires that in courtesy you listen to me for an hour, to justify this apostasy and convert you also, if I

Deletion of Insulin-Degrading Enzyme Elicits Antipodal, Age-Dependent Effects on Glucose and Insulin Tolerance
BACKGROUND Insulin-degrading enzyme (IDE) is widely recognized as the principal protease responsible for the clearance and inactivation of insulin, but its role in glycemic control in vivo is poorly understood. We present here the first longitudinal characterization, to our knowledge, of glucose regulation in mice with pancellular deletion of the IDE gene (IDE-KO mice). METHODOLOGY IDE-KO mic...
متن کاملModeling Distributed Hybrid Systems in Ptolemy II
Ptolemy II [2] supports the modeling of heterogeneous systems by using a hierarchical component-based architecture and well-defined models of computation. The basic component in Ptolemy II is called an actor. Actors have por t s , which are their communication interface to other actors. An aggregation of actors and their connections is called a comp o s i t e ac tor . A composi te actor can hav...

متن کاملAn Analysis of the Impact of Moral Action on Man (Looking at the Seventh Verse of Chapter Abraham)
The Holy Koran opens a special look at moral issues to its audience and provides the basis for many moral views. One of these views is related to the function (outcome, effect and result of something) of ethics. By referring to the verses of the Koran, such as the seventh verse of chapter Abraham, moral behavior causes excess and deficiency in man (self), not excess and deficiency in blessings....
