چکیده

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) of unsaturated fatty acids in bimolecular lipid membranes (BLM), induced by ultraviolet irradiation [l-3] or by chemical agents [4], brings about an increase in conductivity of these membranes. For BLM prepared from egg phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol mixture this effect is accounted for by the rise of proton permeability [3,5]; the maximal conductivity enhancement being <2-3-times higher as compared to the initial level [3]. In contrast with this case, BLM prepared from brain phospholipids [2] exhibited a much more pronounced effect: the conductivity rise was sharp and reached several orders of magnitude. In the light of the observation that ultraviolet-induced LPO reduces BLM electric stability (the measure of which can be the ‘breakdown’ potential) [6], one may assume that the electric instability contributes significantly to the observed ‘high amplitude’ increase in BLM conductivity caused by LPO. In the LPO reaction a great variety of products is produced [7] and the secondary products of LPO are found to be the most effective in the activation of BLM ionic conductivity [ 11. But the precise mechanism by which these substances influence the electric properties of lipid membranes is still to be unravelled. It is the purpose of this paper to estimate the contribution of electric breakdown to the LPOinduced increase in the ionic permeability of BLM and the involvement of charged LPO products into this process. 2. Time-dependent effect of rutin on skin fibroblasts membrane disruption following UV radiation

Chronic exposure of the skin to solar UV radiation induces a number of biological alterations, including a redox imbalance; therefore, there is an urgent need for skin cells protective compounds. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of natural, previously extensively examined, polyphenol with antioxidant properties - rutin, on UV-induced skin fibroblasts membrane disruption. Restorative Effect of Vitamin E Supplementation on Hepatic Lipid Peroxidation and Lipid Profile Changes Induced by Sublethal γ-Radiation in BALB/c Mice

In order to find a prophylactic supplementation for individuals who are at risk of exposure to ionizing radiation, we attempted to evaluate the effect of Vitamin E (Vit-E), a biological free radical scavenger, on restoration of hepatic lipid peroxidation (LPO) and lipid profile (LP) changes induced by sublethal g- radiation in BALB/c mice. The concentrations of cholesterol and phospholipid were...

Lipid peroxidation induces cholesterol domain formation in model membranes.

Numerous reports have established that lipid peroxidation contributes to cell injury by altering the basic physical properties and structural organization of membrane components. Oxidative modification of polyunsaturated phospholipids has been shown, in particular, to alter the intermolecular packing, thermodynamic, and phase parameters of the membrane bilayer. In this study, the effects of oxi...

Changes in composition and properties of erythrocyte membrane in chronic alcoholics.

AIMS AND METHODS Alterations in cholesterol and phospholipid contents as well as fluidity and lipid peroxidation in erythrocyte membranes from chronic alcoholic humans were investigated. RESULTS While an increase in cholesterol with no change in phospholipid content was observed in erythrocyte membranes, the phospholipid content increased with no change in cholesterol in plasma. CONCLUSIONS...

Elasticity, strength and stability of bilayer lipid membranes and their changes due to phospholipid modification.

Elasticity measurements of bilayer lipid membranes (BLM) based on registration of the third harmonic of the membrane current during the application of a periodic tension to the membrane was used to study the effects of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and phospholipase A on BLM. LPO resulted in decreased values of the Young modulus for BLM, while some products of LPO and phospholipid hydrolysis (linole...
