چکیده

1098-4402= A Bragg waveguide consisting of multiple dielectric layers with alternating index of refraction becomes an excellent option to form electron accelerating structure powered by high power laser sources. It provides confinement of a synchronous speed-of-light mode with extremely low loss. However, laser field cannot be coupled into the structure collinearly with the electron beam. There are three requirements in designing input coupler for a Bragg electron accelerator: side coupling, selective mode excitation, and high coupling efficiency. We present a side-coupling scheme using a distributed grating-assisted coupler to inject the laser power into the waveguide. Side coupling is achieved by a grating with a period on the order of an optical wavelength. The phase matching condition results in resonance coupling thus providing selective mode excitation capability. The coupling efficiency is limited by profile matching between the outgoing beam and the incoming beam, which has normally a Gaussian profile. We demonstrate a nonuniform distributed grating structure generating an outgoing beam with a Gaussian profile, therefore, increasing the coupling efficiency.

Optical Response of Grating-coupler-induced Intersubband Resonances: the Role of Wood’s Anomalies

Grating-coupler-induced collective intersubband transitions in a quasi-twodimensional electron system are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Far-infrared transmission experiments are performed on samples containing a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas quantum-confined in a parabolic quantum well. For rectangular shaped grating couplers of different periods we observe a strong d...

Design and characterization of a grating-assisted coupler enhanced by a photonic-band-gap structure for effective wavelength-division demultiplexing.

We report a novel grating-assisted coupler that incorporates a photonic-band-gap structure. It is shown that by virtue of the resonant cavity formed by the structure and the grating the relative amounts of the output scattered and the transmitted guided-wave powers can be significantly modified. The potential applications for optical switches and wavelength demultiplexers based on this new conf...

Creating very slow optical gap solitons with a grating-assisted coupler.

We show that optical gap solitons can be produced with velocities down to 4% of the group velocity of light using a grating-assisted coupler, i.e., a fiber Bragg grating that is linearly coupled to a non-Bragg fiber over a finite domain. Forward- and backward-moving light pulses in the non-Bragg fiber(s) that reach the coupling region simultaneously couple into the Bragg fiber and form a moving...

An Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer with a Grating-Loaded Directional Coupler in Silica Waveguides∗

An optical add-drop multiplexer with a gratingloaded directional coupler in silica waveguides is demonstrated. The device for this configuration has a large fabrication tolerance and is small in size. A new scheme, in which the coupling length of the directional coupler is twice the complete coupling length, enables low cross-talk for both add and drop operations. This device is polarization-in...

Grating-Assisted Fibre-Slab Couplers

Coupled-mode equations for an asymmetric fibre-to-planar optical coupling system, incorporated a grating structure are presented. A grating-assisted coupling coefficient is described. When the parameters of the coupler are such that there is no phase synchronism between the fibre and the slab modes, the grating enhances the coupling in both the resultant amplitude and phase modulation. However,...
