Cosmic Star-Formation History
نویسنده
چکیده
I review some recent progress made in our understanding of galaxy evolution and the cosmic history of star formation. Like bookends, the results obtained from deep ground-based spectroscopy and from the Hubble Deep Field imaging survey put brackets around the intermediate redshift interval, 1 < z < 2, where starbirth probably peaked at a rate 10 times higher than today. The steady decline observed since z ∼ 1 is largely associated with late-type galaxies. At z ∼ 2.5, the Lyman-break selected objects may represent the precursors of present-day spheroids, but appear, on average, quite underluminous relative to the expectations of the standard early-and-rapidly forming picture for spheroidal systems. The observed ultraviolet light density accounts for the bulk of the metals seen today in “normal” massive galaxies.

Star Formation History up to z = 7.4: Implications for Gamma-Ray Bursts and the Cosmic Metallicity Evolution
The current Swift sample of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with measured redshifts allows to test the assumption that GRBs trace the star formation in the Universe. Some authors have claimed that the rate of GRBs increases with cosmic redshift faster than the star formation rate, whose cause is not known yet. In this paper, I investigate the possibility for interpreting the observed discrepancy betwee...
متن کاملTesting the Relation between the Local and Cosmic Star Formation Histories
Recently, there has been great progress toward observationally determining the mean star formation history of the universe. When accurately known, the cosmic star formation rate could provide much information about Galactic evolution, if the Milky Way’s star formation rate is representative of the average cosmic star formation history. A simple hypothesis is that our local star formation rate i...
متن کاملStar formation at high redshift as traced by near-infrared Hα emission surveys
Surveys of redshifted emission lines in the near-infrared will provide unique information on the cosmic star formation history. Near-infrared Hα surveys will probe the cosmic star formation density and the evolution of the luminosity function of star forming galaxies out to z ∼ 2.5, including the important z = 1.5 − 2.0 epoch, where according to current knowledge the cosmic star formation densi...

متن کاملAn analytical model for the history of cosmic star formation
We use simple analytic reasoning to identify physical processes that drive the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate, ρ̇?, in cold dark matter universes. Based on our analysis, we formulate a model to characterise the redshift dependence of ρ̇? and compare it to results obtained from a set of hydrodynamic simulations which include star formation and feedback. We find that the cosmic star fo...
متن کاملEffects of metal enrichment and metal cooling in galaxy growth and cosmic star formation history
We present the results of a numerical study on the effects of metal enrichment and metal cooling on galaxy formation and cosmic star formation (SF) history using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We find following differences in the simulation with metal cooling when compared to the run without it: (1) the cosmic star formation rate (SFR) is enhanced by about 50 & 20% at z = 1 & 3, respect...
