چکیده

The IETF's recent di erentiated services architecture, which speci es a scalable mechanism for treating packets di erently, o ers new opportunities for building endto-end quality of service (QoS) systems. However, it also introduces new challenges. In particular, it is not clear whether TCP's ow and congestion control mechanisms work well with the mechanisms used for end-to-end QoS. For that reason it is essential to analyze whether the existing di erentiated services mechanisms can be used with standard TCP implementations or whether it is necessary to wait for upcoming features introduced in future modi ed versions of TCP. The Globus Architecture for Reservation and Allocation (GARA) supports ow-speci c QoS speci cation, immediate and advance reservation, and online monitoring and control of both individual resources and heterogeneous resource ensembles. Using GARA, we evaluated actual di erentiated services mechanisms provided by Cisco routers. We present the results of this evaluation and discuss their impact on the performance of popular TCP implementations.

A new Three Color Marker for TCP flows

In Differentiated Services networks, packets may receive a different treatment according to their Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) label. As a consequence, packet marking schemes can be devised to differentiate packets belonging to a same TCP flow, with the goal of improving the experienced performance. This paper presents an extensive performance evaluation of a new adaptive packet ma...

Evaluating Performance Among Different TCP flows in a Differentiated Services Enabled Network

This paper examines the interaction among short-lived and long-lived TCP flows in a test network that can be operated as an ordinary best effort or as a Differentiated Services (DS) enabled network, and shows how TCP service can be improved by isolating TCP flows based on their different characteristics. The target of the measurements was to investigate the interaction among TCP flows having si...

Configuring a Differentiated Services domain towards achieving fair distribution of resources between TCP and UDP flows

In this paper experimental results from simulating a Differentiated Services network are presented. The simulated network is configured towards achieving a fair distribution of network resources between congestion responsive TCP and congestion unresponsive UDP flows, tackling the TCP friendliness issue. The main configuration parameters, considered in this paper, are the TCP and UDP Committed I...

A Framework for Practical Performance Evaluation and Traffic Engineering in IP Networks

We propose a model for performance evaluation (average throughput, packet delay and loss probability) of IP networks that are dominated by congestion-controlled (i.e., TCP-like) traffic. Our model includes heterogeneous TCP flows, UDP flows, short-lived TCP flows, and TCP flows in a differentiated services network. We also introduce a practical approach to estimating the performance of large sc...
