Consonant Acquisition in Taiwanese: A Functional Optimality-Theoretic Account
نویسندگان
چکیده
This is a case study of a child acquiring Taiwanese as her first language, attempting to model the phonological error patterns as well as output variation based on an optimality-theoretic (hereafter OT) analysis for her initial consonant acquisition. Driven by the fact that children usually do not produce one single output form that is identical to adults’, and the rule-based approach would further complicate child phonology, we, following Liu and Tsay (2000), approached the variation phenomenon in children’s phonology acquisition based on the OT framework with the Floating Constraints (Nagy and Reynolds 1997). While different from Liu and Tsay (2000), we also considered the functional constraint *GESTURE [tongue: distal] (revised based on Boersma’s Production Grammar Constraint, 1998) in our OT model in order to better capture the phenomena of the velarization pattern, i.e., substitution with the velar stop [k], a phenomena not found in Liu and Tsay’s study and rarely reported in the relevant literature. We argue that the error pattern found here is biologically motivated by minimization of effort on the same ground as the motoric account Meier (2002) proposed for the sign language acquisition. The finding and the approach adopted in the current study support Myers and Tsay’s (2003) suggestion that a formal model with functional factors considered can better describe phonological patterns since the functionalist-based OT model can not only explicitly describe how constraints are selected, ranked, and evaluated, but it also can reflect the extra-grammatical factors, such as speech physiology and auditory perception. The organization of the remainder is as follows: Section 2 reviews the literature regarding Optimality Theory about language acquisition, language variation, and Liu and Tsay (2000). Section 3 reports methodology to the current case study and the general observation. Section 4 presents the analysis of the data based on a revised OT model. We will conclude our findings in the last section.

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*
This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
متن کاملAn Optimality Theoretic Approach to Child Language Acquisition
1 AN OPTIMALITY THEORETIC APPROACH TO CHILD LANGUAGE ACQUISITION 2 One goal of linguistics is to develop models for how children acquire language. Boersma, Escudero, and Hayes (2003) provide a model using an Optimality Theoretic (OT) approach to show how children might learn to group language specific F1 frequencies into phonetic categories. The model utilizes initially high-ranked discriminato...
متن کاملPalatalization and glide strengthening as competing repair strategies: Evidence from Kirundi
Alternations involving place-changing palatalization (e.g. t+j ʧ in spirit – spiritual) are very common and have been a focus of much generative phonological work since Chomsky & Halle’s (1968) ‘Sound Pattern of English’. The interest in palatalization and its mechanisms (see e.g. Sagey 1990; Chen 1996; Bateman 2007) has somewhat obscured the question of how these processes fit into a wider t...
متن کاملTypological Universals and Intrinsic Universals on the L2 Acquisition of Consonant Clusters
This study is to examine if typological universals built upon primary languages are applicable to interlanguage data in SLA. Implicational universal is considered the classic example of a typological universal by Croft (2003). Thus, the Interlanguage Structural Conformity Hypothesis, which consists of two implicational universals proposed by Eckman (1991), were tested against data from an inter...
متن کاملDevelopmental paths in the acquisition of the Japanese liquid:An Optimality-theoretic perspective
This study offers a unified account of the acquisition of the Japanese liquid. It is recgonized that there are two possible paths children take to reach the fully developed system with respect to the acquisition of the liquid. We first provide detailed data for these two paths. These data are analyzed under Optimality Theory. We discuss that the acquisition of the liquid is explicated by positi...
