Unilateral absence of an extensor digitorum longus muscle and variations of toe tendons

چکیده
Introduction During routine dissection in the gross anatomy course, the author was called to confirm the absence of the right extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle in a 49-year-old Caucasian male who died of pneumonia. Once confirmed, the author also noted the left foot had only a single EDL tendon to the fifth toe. Further dissection by the author revealed other tendon variations. During the dissection of almost 1,400 cadavers, this was the first time these variations were seen. The EDL muscle is found in the anterior compartment of the leg and is the primary extensor of the second-fifth toes; it is innervated by the deep fibular nerve. The function of the EDL is assisted by the extensor digitorum brevis (EDB) muscle that sends tendons to the second-fourth toes. Much like the tibialis anterior and fibularis tertius muscles, the EDL functions to dorsiflex the foot and toes for ground clearance during the swing phase of walking [1]. The fibularis tertius tendon can be absent in up to 10% of the population, and it often appears to be part of the EDL where it has been described as its “fifth tendon” [2]. During surgical procedures, EDL tendons can be used for tendon grafts [3]. Although its presence has not been questioned by surgeons, its potential absence could present a surgical hindrance if EDL tendons are used for ankle stabilization.

Variations of Plantaris, Palmaris Longus, and Fifth Superficial Flexor Tendons: a Cadaver Study
Background & Aims: The Plantaris muscle is located in the superficial posterior compartment of the leg and is absent in some individuals. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the absence variation of Plantaris muscle and its possible relation with Palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum of the hand. Methods: 83 fresh cadavers, referred to legal medicine center, Kerman, Ir...
متن کاملThe Role of Presence /Absence of Palmaris Longus and Fifth Flexor Digitorum Superfiscialis Tendons in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Background & Aims: Etiologically the causing factor of carpal tunnel syndrome is not clear and multiple contributing factors such as the presence or absence of Palmaris longus tendon have been cited. The aim of the present study was to compare patients with carpal tunnel syndrome and healthy individuals in regard to the absence and presence of Palmaris longus and fifth flexor digitarum superfic...
متن کاملMultiple variations of the extensor tendons of the forearm.
Anatomic variations of the extensor tendons of the forearm are frequent and its knowledge is important to assess the diseased and traumatized hand. During routine cadaveric dissection in the Department of Anatomy, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India, we came across unusual variations in the left upper limb of a 51-years-old male cadaver. The variants are, the complete absence of the exte...
متن کاملVariations in the insertion of the extensor hallucis longus muscle.
Reports that describe abnormalities of the muscles and tendons of the leg and foot are important with regard to understanding the function of the lower limb and correlating these abnormalities with the clinical aspects. Variations in the insertion of the extensor hallucis longus muscle were studied in 60 adult human cadavers. Three different patterns of insertion were noticed. Pattern I (65%): ...
متن کاملAnalysis of the morphometry and variations in the extensor digitorum brevis muscle: an anatomic guide for muscle flap and tendon transfer surgical dissection
The extensor digitorum brevis muscle (EDB) is a practical option for use as an island flap or free flap when reconstructing soft tissue defects in the ankle as well as in the entire lower limb. It is frequently used to correct crossover toe deformity and other painful toe disorders. We evaluated the morphometry of the EDB in 44 formalin-fixed limbs. Length and width of the muscles were measured...
