Descent with Modification: A Darwinian View of Life

چکیده
Keen observers of living things have long noted that organisms are well suited to their environments, that there is a rich diversity of life on Earth, and that life shows a striking unity. Charles Darwin’s fascination with ―endless forms most beautiful‖ led him to propose a scientific explanation for these broad observations. On November 24, 1859, Darwin published his hypothesis in On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, ushering in the era of evolutionary biology. Darwin defined evolution as descent with modification, proposing that Earth’s many species are descendants of ancestral species that were very different from those alive today. ○ Evolution can also be defined more narrowly as a change in the genetic composition of a population over time. Evolution is both a pattern and a process. ○ The pattern of evolutionary change is revealed in observations about the natural world. ○ The process of evolution consists of the mechanisms that have produced the diversity and unity of living things.

The Darwinian View of Life
The Darwinian evolutionary theory is a composite and complex theory elaborated by Darwin during a long period of time, which proposed a new conception of life that evaded the metaphysical and finalist dimension, and which was firmly grounded on the level of scientific and naturalistic explanation. In the new interpretative picture, life emerges as an historical process realized by the descent w...
متن کاملDarwinian perspectives on the evolution of human languages
Human languages evolve by a process of descent with modification in which parent languages give rise to daughter languages over time and in a manner that mimics the evolution of biological species. Descent with modification is just one of many parallels between biological and linguistic evolution that, taken together, offer up a Darwinian perspective on how languages evolve. Combined with stati...
متن کاملToward the Darwinian transition: Switching between distributed and speciated states in a simple model of early life.
It has been hypothesized that in the era just before the last universal common ancestor emerged, life on earth was fundamentally collective. Ancient life forms shared their genetic material freely through massive horizontal gene transfer (HGT). At a certain point, however, life made a transition to the modern era of individuality and vertical descent. Here we present a minimal model for stochas...

Some early attempts at scientific or philosophical discussion of life were apparent in Greece. For example, Thales (the earliest of the identified Greek philosophers) argued that everything stemmed ultimately from water. He therefore had a somewhat vague idea that descent with modification was possible, since things had to diversify from a common origin. Aristotle suggested that in every thing ...
متن کاملRace and language in the Darwinian tradition (and what Darwin's language-species parallels have to do with it).
What should human languages be like if humans are the products of Darwinian evolution? Between Darwin's day and our own, expectations about evolution's imprint on language have changed dramatically. It is now a commonplace that, for good Darwinian reasons, no language is more highly evolved than any other. But Darwin, in The descent of man, defended the opposite view: different languages, like ...
