Are There Material Objects in Bohm ’ s Theory ?

چکیده

Bedard (1999) argues that “Bohm’s interpretation is not as classical as it initially appears” (p. 223) and that, in particular, the common view that the pilot-wave theory can get by with an ontology of just particles “do[es] not make sense” (ibid.). Indeed, “sets of Bohmian particles do not have all the intrinsic properties necessary to constitute a material object” (ibid.). This last remark is the heart of Bedard’s impressive paper, the point being that the ‘minimalist’ interpretation of the pilot-wave theory (according to which the only entities are the particles, and their only fundamental property position) has no account of material objects. In this note, I shall suggest that in fact the minimalist’s interpretation is fully adequate. Bedard shows that the minimalist’s physical world (consisting of just particles with position) is too sparse to explain why, for example, Louis de Broglie (1924) formulated essentially the same theory that Bohm (1952) did. An examination of his dissertation reveals that in fact his theory was much closer to Bohm’s than is usually assumed. I have chosen, therefore, to use the ‘neutral’ term ‘pilot-wave theory’.

Cannot Local Reality Exist in the Epr-bohm Gedankenexperiment ?

We model measuring processes of a single spin-1/2 object and of a pair of spin1/2 objects in the EPR-Bohm state by systems of differential equations. Our model is a local model with hidden-variables of the EPR-Bohm Gedankenexperiment. Although there is no dynamical interaction between a pair of spin-1/2 objects, the model can reproduce approximately the quantum-mechanical correlations by the co...

Gravity and the Quantum Potential

We review some material connecting gravity and the quantum potential and provide a few new observations. The main theme is that in utilizing a conformal (Weyl) geometry the metric plus the Weyl vector plus the quantummass field determine spacetime geometry. There are strong connections to deBroglie-Bohm style ideas in quantum theory.

Does Schrödinger’s Cat Know Something That Schrödinger Does Not Know?

Macroscopic objects appear to have definite positions. In a manyworlds interpretation of quantum theory, this appearance is an illusion; the correct view is the “view from outside” in which even macroscopic objects are in general in a superposition of different positions. In the Bohm model, objects really are in definite positions. This additional aspect of reality is accessible only from the “...

اثرات ناخالصی‌های مغناطیسی بر عبور الکترون از یک نانو حلقه کوانتومی

In this paper we study the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of transmission coefficient for an electron passing through a quantum nanoring with two identical magnetic impurities using quantum waveguide theory. It is shown that the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations are independent of the coupling constant between the electron and magnetic impurities for the singlet spin state of impurities, while for the o...

A TAXICAB VERSION OF A TRIANGLE' S APOLLONIUS CIRCLE

One of the most famous problems of classical geometry is the Apollonius' problem asks construction of a circle which is tangent to three given objects. These objects are usually taken as points, lines, and circles. This well known problem was posed by Apollonius of Perga ( about 262 - 190 B.C.) who was a Greek mathematician known as the great geometer of ancient times after Euclid and Archimede...
