Sheared deep vortical convection in pre‐depression Hagupit during TCS08

چکیده
[1] Airborne Doppler radar observations from the recent Tropical Cyclone Structure 2008 field campaign in the western North Pacific reveal the presence of deep, buoyant and vortical convective features within a vertically‐sheared, westward‐moving pre‐depression disturbance that later developed into Typhoon Hagupit. On two consecutive days, the observations document tilted, vertically coherent precipitation, vorticity, and updraft structures in response to the complex shearing flows impinging on and occurring within the disturbance near 18 north latitude. The observations and analyses herein suggest that the low‐level circulation of the pre‐depression disturbance was enhanced by the coupling of the low‐level vorticity and convergence in these deep convective structures on the meso‐gamma scale, consistent with recent idealized studies using cloud‐representing numerical weather prediction models. Further examination of these new observations is needed to quantify the relative role of these vortical convection features in the tropical cyclone spin up process. Citation: Bell, M. M., and M. T. Convective Bursts, Downdraft Cooling, and Boundary Layer Recovery in a Sheared Tropical Storm
Tropical Storm Edouard (2002) experienced episodic outbreaks of convection downshear within the storm core in the presence of 11–15 m s of ambient vertical wind shear. These outbreaks lasted 2–6 h and were followed by long periods with no deep convection. Flights fromU.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft within the boundary layer were used to investigate the cause of one such oscillation. Low ...
متن کاملA possible theory for the interaction between convective activities and vortical flows
Theoretical studies usually attribute convections to the developments of instabilities such as the static or symmetric instabilities of the basic flows. However, the following three facts make the validities of these basic theories unconvincing. First, it seems that in most cases the basic flow with balance property cannot exist as the exact solution, so one cannot formulate appropriate problem...
متن کاملLarge-scale instability in a sheared nonhelical turbulence: Formation of vortical structures.
We study a large-scale instability in a sheared nonhelical turbulence that causes generation of large-scale vorticity. Three types of the background large-scale flows are considered, i.e., the Couette and Poiseuille flows in a small-scale homogeneous turbulence, and the "log-linear" velocity shear in an inhomogeneous turbulence. It is known that laminar plane Couette flow and antisymmetric mode...
متن کاملSecond-order structure function analysis of scatterometer winds over the Tropical Pacific
Kolmogorov second-order structure functions are used to quantify and compare the small-scale information contained in near-surface ocean wind products derived from measurements by ASCAT on MetOp-A and SeaWinds on QuikSCAT. Two ASCAT and three SeaWinds products are compared in nine regions (classified as rainy or dry) in the tropical Pacific between 10 S and 10 N and 140 and 260 E for the period...
