چکیده

Gold bearing veining linked to transcrustal fault zones in the Transantarctic Mountains (northern Victoria Land, Antarctica)" (2007). Related Publications from ANDRILL Affiliates. Paper 20. Summary Gold mineralization is associated with the paleo-Pacific margin of Gondwana and is related to processes of subduction/accretion and magmatism. Northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) was part of this margin during the Paleozoic, however no occurrence of gold has been reported up to now in the Transantarctic Mountains. Here we describe for the first time gold-bearing quartz veins in northern Victoria Land. The veins are hosted primarily by metabasalts and occur in a brittle-ductile high strain zone with curved geometry and reverse kinematic. Veins are extensional and shear veins; they often have ribbon/banded texture typical of crack and seal processes. Preliminary petrographic investigations point to strong hydrothermal alteration with growth of chlorite + quartz and then of sericite + carbonates + sulphides approaching the vein. Available data are discussed with the aim to understand the origin of the gold deposit and to frame it in the regional tectonic evolution. Abstract 212, 4 p.

Variations in crustal structure across the transition from West to East Antarctica , Southern Victoria Land

S U M M A R Y The crustal structure beneath Ross Island and the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) in Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, is inferred using non-linear inversion of receiver functions, derived from teleseismic earthquake data. Intermediate-period waveforms from more than 160 teleseismic earthquakes recorded between January 1994 and January 2000 were used in the analysis. The inversio...

Uplift history and structure of the Transantarctic Mountains: new evidence from fission track dating of basement apatites in the Dry Valleys area, southern Victoria Land

Fission track analysis of apatites from basement rocks of the Wright Valley in southern Victoria Land provides information about the timing. the amount and hence the rate of uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains in this area. Apatite ages increase systematically with elevation, and a pronounced break in the age versus elevation profile has been recognised at about 800 m on Mt. Doody near the m...

Airborne laser swath mapping of the Denton Hills, Transantarctic Mountains, Antarctica: Applications for structural and glacial geomorphic mapping

High-resolution digital elevation data acquired by airborne laser scanning (ALS) for the Denton Hills, along the coastal foothills of the Royal Society Range, Transantarctic Mountains, are examined for applications to bedrock and glacial geomorphic mapping. Digital elevation models (DEMs), displayed as shaded-relief images and slope maps, portray geomorphic landscape features in unprecedented d...

Shear-wave velocities under the Transantarctic Mountains and Terror Rift from surface wave inversion

Rayleigh wave data between 20 and 120s period recorded in the western Ross Sea region of Antarctica are inverted using the waveform inversion technique described in Passier and Snieder [1995]. From the data we extract estimates of local S velocity structure beneath the Transantarctic Mountains and the Terror Rift. The shear wave velocities found are up to 6 % slower than the PREM model at betwe...

Latitudinal distribution and mitochondrial DNA (COI) variability of Stereotydeus spp. (Acari: Prostigmata) in Victoria Land and the central Transantarctic Mountains

We examined mitochondrial DNA (COI) variability and distribution of Stereotydeus spp. in Victoria Land and the Transantarctic Mountains, and constructed Neighbour Joining (NJ) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) phylogenetic trees using all publicly available COI sequences for the three Stereotydeus species present (S. belli, S. mollis and S. shoupi). We also included new COI sequences from Miers, Mars...
