چکیده

A growing body of research investigates how humans learn complex hierarchical structures with center-embedded recursion (Bahlmann, Schubotz, & Friderici, 2008; Poletiek & Lai, 2012). Increasing evidence indicates that properties of the learning input have an impact on learning this type of recursion. For instance, recent studies found that staged input, fewer unique exemplars and unequal repetition facilitate learning (e.g. Lai, Krahmer, & Sprenger, 2014; Lai & Poletiek, 2011, 2013). Most of these studies investigated learning center-embedded recursion through visual input, whereas few studies examined the processing of auditory input. In the current study, we test: 1) whether participants are able to learn center-embedded recursive structure from exclusively auditory input; 2) whether the facilitative cues (ordering and frequency distribution) are attuned to the auditory modality. Our results successfully demonstrate the learning of auditory sequences with center-embedded recursion, and replicated the effect with visual input in the previous study (Lai et al., 2014).

The Influence of Language-specific Auditory Cues on the Learnability of Center-embedded Recursion

The learnability of center-embedded recursive structures has attracted much attention (Corballis, 2007; Friederici, 2004; Rey, Perruchet, & Fagot, 2012). However, most of the previous studies adopted the artificial grammar learning paradigm (Reber, 1967) and did not apply natural language stimuli. Rather, they applied synthetic meaningless training materials, which hardly represent the richness...

A Single Layer Network Model of Sentential Recursive Patterns

Recurrent connectionist models, such as the simple recurrent network (SRN, Elman, 1991), have been shown to be able to account for people’s ability to process sentences with center embedded structures of limited depth without recourse to a competence grammar that allows unbounded recursion (Christiansen & Chater, 1999). To better understand the connectionist approaches to recursive structures, ...

The Impact of Starting Small on the Learnability of Recursion

Recursion is argued to be the crucial property distinguishing human and non-human primates language learning faculty (Hauser, Chomsky, & Fitch, 2002). Recently, 2 studies (Bahlmann & Friederici, 2006; de Vries, Monaghan, Knecht, & Zwitserlood, 2008), which investigated the learnability of a recursive artificial grammar of the type of AB, used the same material but reported divergent results. We...

When Less is Less and When Less is More: Starting Small with Staged Input

It has been suggested that external and/or internal limitations may paradoxically lead to superior learning (i.e., the concepts of “starting small” and “less is more”; Elman, 1993; Newport, 1990). In this paper, we explore what conditions might lead to a starting small effect. We report on four artificial grammar learning experiments with human participants. In Experiment 1A, we found an effect...

Learnability of Restricted Logic Programs

An active area of research in machine learning is learning logic programs from examples; this subarea is sometimes called inductive logic programming. This paper investigates this problem formally, using as our primary technical tool the method of prediction-preserving reducibilities and the model of polynomial predictability introduced by Pitt and Warmuth 1990]. We focus on the learnability of...
