Active Contour Model for the Detection of Sharp Corners in Image Boundaries

چکیده
Active contours are a form of curves that deform according to an energy minimizing function and are widely used in computer vision and image processing applications to extract features of interests from raw images acquired from an image capturing device. One of the major limitations in an active contour is its inability to converge accurately when the object of interest exhibits sharp corners. In this paper, a new technique to deform the active contour by incorporating prior knowledge of significant corners of the object detected using the Harris operator is introduced. The newly constructed active contour deforms towards the boundary of the object without bypassing sharp corner points. Experimental results with several synthetic images show the ability of the new technique to extract features of interest from images consisting of sharp corners with a high accuracy than traditional methods.

Edge Grouping for Detecting Salient Boundaries with Sharp Corners
The Gestalt law of continuity, or smoothness, is an important factor in guiding the edge grouping. In practice, however, the boundaries of many salient structures of interest may not be smooth everywhere and may contain some sharp corners. This paper presents a globally optimal edge-grouping method that can detect perceptually salient boundaries with sharp corners. In this method, a set of stra...

Deformable active contours are widely used in computer vision and image processing applications for image segmentation, especially in biomedical image analysis. The active contour or “snake” deforms towards a target object by controlling the internal, image and constraint forces. However, if the contour initialized with a lesser number of control points, there is a high probability of surpassin...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for Skin Lesion Border Detection in Dermoscopy Images
Background: With advances in medical imaging systems, digital dermoscopy has become one of the major imaging modalities in the analysis of skin lesions. Thus, automated segmentation or border detection has a great impact on the subsequent steps of skin cancer computer-aided diagnosis using demoscopy images. Since dermoscopy images suffer from artifacts such as shading and hair, there is a need ...
متن کاملA FILTERED B-SPLINE MODEL OF SCANNED DIGITAL IMAGES
We present an approach for modeling and filtering digitally scanned images. The digital contour of an image is segmented to identify the linear segments, the nonlinear segments and critical corners. The nonlinear segments are modeled by B-splines. To remove the contour noise, we propose a weighted least q m s model to account for both the fitness of the splines as well as their approximate cur...
متن کاملLevel Set Based Multispectral Segmentation with Corners
In this paper we propose an active contour model for segmentation based on the Chan-Vese model. The new model can capture inherent sharp features, i.e., the sharp corners of objects, which are often smoothed by the regularization term in segmentation. Motivated by the snaked based method in (Droske and Bertozzi SIAM J. on Image Sci. 2010) that emphasizes straight edges and corners without regar...
