A functional reference architecture for autonomous driving
نویسندگان
چکیده
Context As autonomous driving technology matures towards series production, it is necessary to take a deeper look at various aspects of electrical/electronic (E/E) architectures for autonomous driving. Objective This paper describes a functional reference architecture for autonomous driving, along with various considerations that influence such an architecture. The functionality is described at the logical level, without dependence on specific implementation technologies. Method Engineering design has been used as the research method, which focuses on creating solutions intended for practical application. The architecture has been refined and applied over a five year period to the construction of prototype autonomous vehicles in three different categories, with both academic and industrial stakeholders. Results The architectural components are divided into categories pertaining to (i) perception, (ii) decision and control, and (iii) vehicle platform manipulation. The architecture itself is divided into two layers comprising the vehicle platform and a cognitive driving intelligence. The distribution of components among the architectural layers considers two extremes: one where the vehicle platform is as "dumb" as possible, and the other, where the vehicle platform can be treated as an autonomous system with limited intelligence. We recommend a clean split between the driving intelligence and the vehicle platform. The architecture description includes identification of stakeholder concerns, which are grouped under the business and engineering cate-

Towards autonomous embedded systems
Machines incorporating embedded systems display a trend towards increasing autonomy. In this position paper, we outline an approach for introducing autonomy in embedded system architectures. The approach involves the creation of an artificial consciousness within the machine. We propose that the artificial consciousness may be represented in the form of domain specific reference architectures. ...
متن کاملA Context-aware Architecture for Mental Model Sharing through Semantic Movement in Intelligent Agents
Recent studies in multi-agent systems are paying increasingly more attention to the paradigm of designing intelligent agents with human inspired concepts. One of the main cognitive concepts driving the core of many recent approaches in multi agent systems is shared mental models. In this paper, we propose an architecture for sharing mental models based on a new concept called semantic movement....
متن کاملDeveloping World Model Data Specifications as Metrics for Sensory Processing for On-Road Driving Tasks
Building knowledge-intensive real-time intelligent control systems is one of the most difficult tasks that humans attempt. It is motivated by the desire to create an artificial reasoning system that displays intelligent behavior (i.e. that can act on the world and successfully accomplish activities that are only possible with the levels of knowledge processing exhibited by human beings). Measur...
متن کاملA Low Cost Sensors Approach for Accurate Vehicle Localization and Autonomous Driving Application
Autonomous driving in public roads requires precise localization within the range of few centimeters. Even the best current precise localization system based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) can not always reach this level of precision, especially in an urban environment, where the signal is disturbed by surrounding buildings and artifacts. Laser range finder and stereo vision h...
متن کاملCAAD: Computer Architecture for Autonomous Driving
We describe the computing tasks involved in autonomous driving, examine existing autonomous driving computing platform implementations. To enable autonomous driving, the computing stack needs to simultaneously provide high performance, low power consumption, and low thermal dissipation, at low cost. We discuss possible approaches to design computing platforms that will meet these needs.
