Do Normal Subgroups Have Straight Tails?

چکیده
1. INTRODUCTION. In this article we show that group representations permit simple, visual explanations of semidirect products and related concepts. Along the way, we prove an extension of Cayley's theorem, define blocks and tails for the resulting representations, and investigate the title question: Do normal subgroups have straight tails? We consider representations of finite groups over the field of complex numbers. Specifically, we define a representation of degree n of a group G to be a homomor-phism from G into a multiplicative group of complex n × n matrices. A more general viewpoint is certainly possible. If F is any field, then an F-representation of G is a homomorphism from G into the automorphism group of some F-vector space. Our first example is somewhat trivial. View the cyclic group of order three as the powers (modulo 3) of a single variable x: Z 3 = =x : x

“Heads I Lose, Tails You Win”, Or, How Richard Wiseman Nullifies Positive Results, and What to Do about It: A Response to Wiseman’s (2010) Critique of Parapsychology
Psychologist Richard Wiseman is a well-known British critic of parapsychology, frequently appearing in the British media to “debunk” psychic research. In his recent (January/February 2010) Skeptical Inquirer article “‘Heads I Win, Tails You Lose’: How Parapsychologists Nullify Null Results”, Wiseman argues that parapsychologists have tended to view positive results as supporting the existence o...
متن کاملGeneralized least-squares estimators for the thickness of heavy tails
For a probability distribution with power law tails, a log–log transformation makes the tails of the empirical distribution function resemble a straight line, leading to a least-squares estimate of the tail thickness. Taking into account the mean and covariance structure of the extreme order statistics leads to improved tail estimators, and a surprising connection with Hill’s estimator. c © 200...
متن کاملModelling Size Distributions of Rural Land Holdings in Scotland
The paper reports ongoing investigations on the size distribution of rural land holdings in the real world (specifically, in Scotland), and in the output of two simulation programs: a simple numerically-based simulation of the partition and repartition of a fixed-size resource between a fixed set of entities (referred to here as R-SG), and an agent-based model of rural land use and land ownersh...
متن کاملClassifying fuzzy normal subgroups of finite groups
In this paper a first step in classifying the fuzzy normalsubgroups of a finite group is made. Explicit formulas for thenumber of distinct fuzzy normal subgroups are obtained in theparticular cases of symmetric groups and dihedral groups.
متن کاملRobust Estimation of the Vadogram : I
It is a matter o f common experience that ore values often do not follow the normal (or lognormal) distributions assumed for them, but, instead, follow some other heavier-tailed distribution. In this paper we discuss the robust estimation o f the variogram when the distribution is normal-like in the central region but heavier than normal in the tails. It is shown that the use o f a fourth-root ...
