LCA for Membrane Processes

چکیده
This chapter presents an overview of the current state of the art concerning the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) to assess and improve the environmental performance and sustainability of processes that use or are based on membrane technologies. A presentation of the LCA methodology is made, based on the current framework defined by the ISO Standard, focusing on the main aspects and how LCA can be applied to a given product or process system. A review of the available studies was done for membrane based or systems in which membranes have an important role, focusing in water treatment process, either for human and industrial application or wastewater treatment. The analysis shows that the application of LCA is still limited in membrane process, and more work still needs to be done, for example, taking into account the manufacture and final disposal/recycling of the membranes and their corresponding process modules, and to properly asses how membranes may increase the sustainability of existing processes by replacing existing technologies with larger environmental impact. As the need to evaluate the environmental impact and sustainability of new processes increases, the application of the LCA methodology will become more common both in process design and/or process operation.

Mitochondrial membrane lipidome defines yeast longevity
Our studies revealed that lithocholic acid (LCA), a bile acid, is a potent anti-aging natural compound that in yeast cultured under longevity-extending caloric restriction (CR) conditions acts in synergy with CR to enable a significant further increase in chronological lifespan. Here, we investigate a mechanism underlying this robust longevity-extending effect of LCA under CR. We found that exo...

The pathogenesis of lithocholic acid (LCA-Na)-induced cholestasis involves a rapid accumulation of cholesterol in the bile canalicular membrane. Since microtubules play an important role in the intracellular transport of many materials, including cholesterol, the present study was undertaken to assess the extent to which they participate in the development of LCA-Na-induced cholestasis. Rats we...

Membrane processes are today one of the key technologies for industrial gas separations and show growing interest for future use in sustainable production systems. Besides materials development, dedicated engineering methods are of major importance for the rigorous and most efficient design of membrane units and systems. Starting from approaches based on simplified hypotheses developed in the 5...
متن کاملAn Approach to Treatment of Recycling in Lca Study
As still evolving scientific tool LCA is a subject to a number of problems such as defining system boundaries; allocation of environmental impacts due to making more than one product in the same processes; geographical variations of processes, etc. However, the weakest methodological point in the LCA is an avoided impact. The avoided impacts in LCA occurs when disposal scenarios involve energy ...

The laryngeal neuromuscular mechanisms for modulating glottal posture and fundamental frequency are of interest in understanding normal laryngeal physiology and treating vocal pathology. The intrinsic laryngeal muscles in an in vivo canine model were electrically activated in a graded fashion to investigate their effects on onset frequency, phonation onset pressure, vocal fold strain, and glott...
