A generalized nonparaxial theoretical framework based on the scalar diffraction theory is developed to describe the propagation of an optical field through a linear optical system with quasi-monochromatic spatially incoherent illumination. Software implementation of this theoretical framework on single and multiple processor platforms was developed and simulated results of the imaging process through optical aberration-corrected optics are presented for both in-focus and out-offocus imaging, validating the first-order nonparaxial model. © 2004 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Nonparaxial scalar treatment of sinusoidal phase gratings.
Scalar diffraction theory is frequently considered inadequate for predicting diffraction efficiencies for grating applications where lambda/d>0.1. It has also been stated that scalar theory imposes energy upon the evanescent diffracted orders. These notions, as well as several other common misconceptions, are driven more by an unnecessary paraxial approximation in the traditional Fourier treatm...
متن کاملThree-dimensional higher-order Padé approximant-based wide-angle beam propagation method using complex Jacobi iteration
Wide-angle scalar beam propagation methods (BPMs) for effective modelling of optical propagation in three-dimensional (3D) waveguides are usually limited to the low-order-accurate Padé(1,1) approximant. Presented is a 3D wide-angle scalar BPM based on higher-order Padé approximant operators which is factored into a series of simpler first-order Padé(1,1) approximants. This results in a multiste...
متن کاملOptical properties of planar colloidal crystals: Dynamical diffraction and the scalar wave approximation
We present a quantitative comparison between two analytic theories for the propagation of electromagnetic waves in periodic dielectric structures. These theories have both been used extensively in the modeling of optical spectra of colloidal crystals exhibiting photonic band gap behavior. We demonstrate that dynamical diffraction theory is equivalent to the scalar wave approximation, in the lim...
متن کاملWide angle near-field diffraction and Wigner distribution
Free-space propagation can be described as a shearing of the Wigner distribution function in the spatial coordinate; this shearing is linear in paraxial approximation but assumes a more complex shape for wide-angle propagation. Integration in the frequency domain allows the determination of near-field diffraction, leading to the well known Fresnel diffraction when small angles are considered an...
