چکیده

Especially for large amplitude initial disturbances so called vortices de velop during the non linear late stages of laminar turbulent transition Once formed they may persist as so called hairpin vortices well into the ensuing turbulent boundary layer This makes their study important for under standing transition and turbulence in wall bounded shear ows In Direct Numerical Simulations DNS as well as in controlled tran sition experiments especially in K type transition vortices have been regularly observed by all authors studying this phenomenon In such ex periments or DNS vortices may be generated periodically in time and in spanwise direction by the non linear interaction of a large amplitude Tollmien Schlichting TS wave with a spatially periodic steady modula tion in spanwise direction with a certain wavelength z z In the present paper we shall demonstrate the in uence of increasing z with the idea of moving spanwise adjacent vortices further apart in order to identify their possible self interaction in the original case where z z

Boundary layer transition in high-speed flows due to roughness

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is used to study the effect of individual (hemispherical) and distributed roughness on supersonic flat plate boundary layers. In both cases, roughness generates a shear layer and counter–rotating pairs of unsteady streamwise vortices. The vortices perturb the shear layer, resulting in trains of hairpin vortices and a highly unsteady flow. Mach 3.37 flow past a ...

Entropy generation in bypass transitional boundary layer flows

The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) turbulence models to predict entropy generation rates in bypass transitional boundary layers flows under zero and adverse pressure gradients. Entropy generation rates in such flows are evaluated employing the commercial CFD software, ANSYS FLUENT. Various turbulence and transitional model...

Boundary layer turbulence in transitional and developed states

Using the recent DNS by Wu and Moin (2010) of a flat-plate boundary layer with a passively heated wall, statistics of the turbulence in transition at Reθ = 500 where spots merge (distributions of the mean velocity, rms velocity and vorticity component fluctuations, kinetic energy production and dissipation rates and enstrophy) have been compared to these statistics for the developed boundary la...

On the dynamics in a boundary layer

This paper presents direct comparisons of related visualization and hot film measurement studies of the nonlinear, late stages of transition in a boundary layer. The preceding nonlinear stages of the transition process are well documented in previous studies. Both the visualizations and measurements were performed with controlled disturbance conditions excited by an instability wave in a flat-p...

DNS of laminar-turbulent transition in swept-wing boundary layers

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) is performed to examine laminar to turbulent transition due to high-frequency secondary instability of stationary crossflow vortices in a subsonic swept-wing boundary layer for a realistic natural-laminar-flow airfoil configuration. The secondary instability is introduced via inflow forcing and the mode selected for forcing corresponds to the most amplified sec...
