چکیده

The interplay of superconductivity and magnetism is a subject of ongoing interest, stimulated most recently by the discovery of Fe-based superconductivity and the recognition that spin-fluctuations near a magnetic quantum critical point may provide an explanation for the superconductivity and the order parameter. Here we investigate magnetism in the Na filled Fe-based skutterudites using first principles calculations. NaFe4Sb12 is a known ferromagnet near a quantum critical point. We find a ferromagnetic metallic state for this compound driven by a Stoner type instability, consistent with prior work. In accord with prior work, the magnetization is overestimated, as expected for a material near an itinerant ferromagnetic quantum critical point. NaFe4P12 also shows a ferromagnetic instability at the density functional level, but this instability is much weaker than that of NaFe4Sb12, possibly placing it on the paramagnetic side of the quantum critical point. NaFe4As12 shows intermediate behavior. We also present results for skutterudite FeSb3, which is a metastable phase that has been reported in thin film form.

Optical properties of the filled skutterudites CeT 4 Sb 12 ( T = Fe , Ru , Os )

We have measured the optical conductivity s1ðoÞ of the filled skutterudites CeFe4Sb12; CeRu4Sb12; and CeOs4Sb12: These s1ðoÞ spectra are explained in terms of the hybridization between Ce 4f states and conduction ðcÞ electron states. From the comparison of the s1ðoÞ spectra, it is concluded that the degree of c–f hybridization is strongest for CeFe4Sb12 and weakest for CeOs4Sb12: r 2003 Elsevie...

Magnetic fluctuations of filled skutterudites emerging in the transition region between singlet and triplet states.

In order to clarify magnetic properties of filled skutterudites, we analyze the Anderson model including seven f orbitals hybridized with an au conduction band using a numerical technique. For n=2 corresponding to Pr-based filled skutterudites, where n is the local f-electron number, even if the ground state is a singlet, there remain significant magnetic fluctuations from a triplet state with ...

Transition metal d-band occupancy in skutterudites studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy

The transition-metal 3d occupancy of a series of thermoelectric skutterudites is investigated using electron energy-loss spectroscopy. We find that bonding causes an emptying of the 3d states in the binary skutterudites CoP3, CoAs3, CoSb3, and NiP3, while compared to the pure Fe the 3d occupancy in LaFe4P12 is significantly increased, consistent with the idea that each interstitial La atom ratt...

Optical properties of MFe4P12 filled skutterudites

Infrared reflectance spectroscopy measurements were made on four members of the MFe4P12 family of filled skutterudites, with M5La, Th, Ce, and U. In progressing from M5La to U the system undergoes a metalinsulator transition. It is shown that, although the filling atom induces such dramatic changes in the transport properties of the system, it has only a small effect on lattice dynamics. We dis...

Multiband magnetism and superconductivity in Fe-based compounds

Recent discovery of superconductivity in Fe-based layered compounds may have opened a new pathway to the room temperature superconductivity. A model Hamiltonian describing FeAs layers is introduced, highlighting the crucial role of puckering of As atoms in promoting d electron itinerancy and warding off large local-moment magnetism of Fe ions, the main enemy of superconductivity. Quantum many-p...
