Vague size predicates
نویسنده
چکیده
Vague predicates such as heap, tall, bald, near to, nicer than, etc. are characterized by their Sorites susceptibility and the existence of borderline cases. In attempting to develop a general theory, diverse vague predicates are often analyzed in rather broad natural language settings. Because this has proven to be rather difficult, the phenomenon of vagueness is studied here in a narrower and strictly formalized setting: Vague size predicates such as "roughly the same size" and "negligible in size with respect to" are studied within the framework of a formalized theory of parthood extended by size predicates. Such a restricted axiomatic framework has a number of advantages: (i) it is easier to analyze logical and semantical aspects of vagueness; (ii) it is possible to study the interrelations between precise quantitative facts and the interpretation of vague and qualitative predicates in a restricted class of models; (iii) it is possible to precisely analyze the logical properties of vague and qualitative size predicates which are fundamental to formalized deductive reasoning. All three aspects are critical for the representation and reasoning about many vague predicates as they are used in many sciences and in medicine.

Topological Predicates Between Vague Spatial Objects
Topological predicates are an important element of database systems that allow manipulation of spatial data. Based on the necessity for such systems to handle uncertainty, we introduce a general mechanism that identifies vague topological predicates. This definition forms part of a formal data model referred to as VASA (Vague Spatial Algebra), in which the data types vague regions, vague lines,...
متن کاملVagueness and Plural Predication
This paper addresses the question of how to model the application of vague predicates like tall and bald to plural subjects like John and Mary and the men. In other words, we are interested in developing a logical analysis for natural language sentences like Mary is tall and The men are bald. In the past 30 years, much research has been devoted to finding the proper logical framework to model t...
متن کاملThe Vagueness of ‘Vague’: Rejoinder to Hull
Is ‘vague’ vague? Aldrich (1937: 94) didn’t think so. Austin (1962: 126) did, and Sorensen (1985) offered a proof. Deas (1989) rejected the proof, but in (2003) I sided with Sorensen. Now Hull (2005) replies on behalf of Deas. Why so much fuss about a single word? One reason, I think, is that a lot depends on how we settle the question. For example, Frege (1903: §56) famously remarked that logi...
متن کاملTopological Reasoning for Identifying a Complete Set of Topological Predicates between Vague Spatial Objects
Current implementations of spatial databases are not capable of handling data that is intrinsically indeterminate or vague. The goal of the Vague Spatial Algebra (VASA) project is to define concepts and implementations that will address this problem. In this paper we further develop work on topological predicates between vague spatial objects. The new developments make use of spatial reasoning ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Vagueness
Vague predicates, those that exhibit borderline cases, pose a persistent problem for philosophers and logicians. Although they are ubiquitous in natural language, when used in a logical context, vague predicates lead to contradiction. This paper will address a question that is intimately related to this problem. Given their inherent imprecision, why do vague predicates arise in the first place?...
