Tightening the Complexity of Equivalence Problems for Commutative Grammars

چکیده
Given two finite-state automata, are the Parikh images of the languages they generate equivalent? This problem was shown decidable in coNEXP by Huynh in 1985 within the more general setting of context-free commutative grammars. Huynh conjectured that a Π2 upper bound might be possible, and Kopczyński and To established in 2010 such an upper bound when the size of the alphabet is fixed. The contribution of this paper is to show that the language equivalence problem for regular and context-free commutative grammars is actually coNEXP-complete. In addition, our lower bound immediately yields further coNEXP-completeness results for equivalence problems for regular commutative expressions, reversal-bounded counter automata and communication-free Petri nets. Finally, we improve both lower and upper bounds for language equivalence for exponent-sensitive commutative grammars. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.1 Models of Computation

Complexity of Problems for Commutative Grammars
We consider Parikh images of languages accepted by non-deterministic finite automata and context-free grammars; in other words, we treat the languages in a commutative way — we do not care about the order of letters in the accepted word, but rather how many times each one of them appears. In most cases we assume that the alphabet is of fixed size. We show tight complexity bounds for problems li...
متن کاملComplexity of Problems of Commutative Grammars
We consider commutative regular and context-free grammars, or, in other words, Parikh images of regular and context-free languages. By using linear algebra and a branching analog of the classic Euler theorem, we show that, under an assumption that the terminal alphabet is fixed, the membership problem for regular grammars (given v in binary and a regular commutative grammar G, does G generate v...
متن کاملOn the Equivalence, Containment, and Covering Problems for the Regular and Context-Free Languages
We consider the complexity of the equivalence and containment problems for regular expressions and context-free grammars, concentrating on the relationship between complexity and various language properties. Finiteness and boundedness of languages are shown to play important roles in the complexity of these problems. An encoding into grammars of Tur ing machine computations exponential in the s...
متن کاملOn Commutative and Nonassociative Syntactic Calculi and Categorial Grammars
Two axiomatizations of the nonassociative and commutative Lambek syntactic calculus are given and their equivalence is proved. The rst axiomatization employs Permutation as the only structural rule, the second one, with no Permutation rule, employs only unidirectional types. It is also shown that in the case of the Aj-dukiewicz calculus an analogous equivalence is valid only in the case of a re...
متن کاملThe Complexity of the Equivalence and Equation Solvability Problems over Meta-abelian Groups
We provide polynomial time algorithms for deciding equation solvability and identity checking over groups that are semidirect products of two nite Abelian groups. Our main method is to reduce these problems to the sigma equation solvability and sigma equivalence problems over modules for commutative unital rings.
