Minor-matching hypertree width

چکیده
In this paper we present a new width measure for a tree decomposition, minor-matching hypertree width, μ-tw, for graphs and hypergraphs, such that bounding the width guarantees that set of maximal independent sets has a polynomially-sized restriction to each decomposition bag. The relaxed conditions of the decomposition allow a much wider class of graphs and hypergraphs of bounded width compared to other tree decompositions. We show that, for fixed k, there are 2 1 k +o(1))(n2) n-vertex graphs of minor-matching hypertree width at most k. A number of problems including Maximum Independence Set, k-Colouring, and Homomorphism of uniform hypergraphs permit polynomial-time solutions for hypergraphs with bounded minor-matching hypertree width and bounded rank. We show that for any given k and any graph G, it is possible to construct a decomposition of minor-matching hypertree width at most O(k), or to prove that μ-tw(G) > k in time n 3). The result relating the restriction of the maximal independent sets to a set S with the set of induced matchings intersecting S in graphs, and minor matchings intersecting S in hypergraphs, might be of independent interest.

متن کاملHypertree-depth and minors in hypergraphs
We introduce two new notions for hypergraphs, hypertree-depth and minors in hypergraphs. We characterise hypergraphs of bounded hypertree-depth by the ultramonotone robber and marshals game, by vertex-hyperrankings and by centred hypercolourings. Furthermore, we show that minors in hypergraphs are ‘well-behaved’ with respect to hypertree-depth and other hypergraph invariants, such as generalise...
متن کاملTree-Related Widths of Graphs and Hypergraphs
A hypergraph pair is a pair (G,H) where G and H are hypergraphs on the same set of vertices. We extend the definitions of hypertree-width [7] and generalised hypertree-width [8] from hypergraphs to hypergraph pairs. We show that for constant k the problem of deciding whether a hypergraph pair has generalised hypertree-width ≤ k, is equivalent to the Hypergraph Sandwich Problem (HSP) [13]. It wa...
متن کاملBacktracking Procedures for Hypertree, HyperSpread and Connected Hypertree Decomposition of CSPs
Hypertree decomposition has been shown to be the most general CSP decomposition method. However, so far the exact methods are not able to find optimal hypertree decompositions of realistic instances. We present a backtracking procedure which, along with isomorphic component detection, results in optimal hypertree decompositions. We also make the procedure generic; variations of which results in...
