KARMEN Timing Anomaly

Recent resuls from experiments at Fermilab and the Paul Scherrer Institute have constrained the parameter space available for a hypothetical particle Q produced in the decay π → μQ. This decay has been invoked to explain a peculiar feature of an event arrival time distribution observed in the KARMEN neutrino experiment.

We show, that SN1987A can serve as an astrophysical laboratory for testing the viability of the assertion that a new massive neutral fermion is implied by the KARMEN data. We show that a wide range of the parameters characterizing the proposed particle is ruled out by the above constraints making this interpretation very unlikely.

Constraints on the lifetime of the heavy sterile neutrino, that was proposed as a possible interpretation of the KARMEN anomaly, are derived from primordial nucleosynthesis and SN 1987A.
