Regional Accent Accommodation in Spontaneous Speech: Evidence for Long-term Accent Change?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Speech communication is a highly interactive process in which speakers actively seek to align themselves with their interlocutors [9]. This study investigates phonetic alignment in spontaneous speech in speakers from two different regional accent backgrounds; Standard Southern British English (SSBE), the prestige accent of British English, and North-East English (NE), a nonstandard accent. Six female pairs of SSBE-NE speakers completed a short preand post-test as well as the Diapix task [2] in mismatched (SSBENE) pairs. Accommodation was investigated using accent ratings. There was some evidence that NE speakers accommodated to SSBE speakers. However, this was limited to a small number of speakers, was dependent on snippet-type (accent neutral or accent revealing) and, in contrast to previous research, did not persist into later talk.

Loss of regional accent after damage to the speech production network
Lesion-symptom mapping studies reveal that selective damage to one or more components of the speech production network can be associated with foreign accent syndrome, changes in regional accent (e.g., from Parisian accent to Alsatian accent), stronger regional accent, or re-emergence of a previously learned and dormant regional accent. Here, we report loss of regional accent after rapidly regre...

Objective:Phonological Mean Length of Utterance (PMLU), a quantitative measure for assessment of phonological skills, has been considered in developmental studies as a diagnostic and clinical criterion in phonological development. Moreover, it is an indicator rate of the efficacy of the intervention. The PMLU is a word level measure that can be calculated on the child’s transcribed speech sampl...

Listeners must cope with a great deal of variability in the speech signal, and thus theories of speech perception must also account for variability, which comes from a number of sources, including variation between accents. It is well known that there is a processing cost when listening to speech in an accent other than one's own, but recent work has suggested that this cost is reduced when lis...
متن کاملPerception of Nonnative Accent: A Cross-Sectional Perspective Pilot Survey
Accent bias is a consequence of ethnocentrism. No studies have examined accent bias across educational levels in the U.S., much less across students and professionals in speech language pathology (SLP), a field that requires multicultural sensitivity training. This study examines nonnative accent perception among three groups—high schoolers, SLP students, and SLP professionals. One-hundred-and-...

We present a study where we examined the influence of a regional accent in the perception of voice and/or speech disorders. These aspects are most of the time overshadowed in clinical context. This protocol, involving multiple sources of speech variations, is also interesting for perception theories. For the experiment, speakers with or without a Southern French accent and with or without speec...
