quivalent - expenditure functions and expenditure - dependent equivalence scales

چکیده
This paper presents and investigates a new class of equivalent-expenditure functions that is a generalization of the one that corresponds to exact (independent-of-base) equivalence scales. It provides less restrictive household demands, especially for children’s goods, and has associated equivalence scales that may depend on expenditure. We show that, under certain conditions, equivalent-expenditure functions and the associated expenditure-dependent equivalence scales can be uniquely estimated from demand data. We estimate them using Canadian data and find that the resulting scales are both plausible and expenditure dependent. The estimated equivalence scales for households with children decline significantly as expenditure increases. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Identification of Fixed Costs
Some household expenditures, such as those for subsistence or basic needs, are fixed. Using the methodology of equivalence scales, we develop a model in which differences in fixed costs of characteristics across households can be identified from household behaviour. Equivalent expenditure for a household is the expenditure needed to bring a reference household, such as a single childless adult,...
متن کاملSemiparametric Estimation of Lifetime Equivalence Scales
Pashardes (1991) and Banks, Blundell and Preston (1994) use parametric methods to estimate lifetime equivalence scales. Their approaches put parametric restrictions on the differences in within-period expenditure needs across household types, the intertemporal allocation of expenditure, and the shapes of commodity demand equations. This paper puts parametric structure only on the differences in...
متن کاملTaking prices seriously in the measurement of inequality
In the measurement of inequality, adjustments for differences across households in their demographic composition and in the price regimes they face are usually very simple. Often, nominal expenditure (or income) is adjusted with an expenditure-independent price deflator and a price-independent equivalence scale. I show that using more flexible expendituredependent price deflators and price-depe...
متن کاملAre Equivalence Scales the Same for the United States and Canada?
This research uses microdata from the 1986 Statistics Canada Family Expenditure S u ~ e y and from the 1986-88 U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey to estimate equivalence scales using a methodology which is very similar to that employed by Statistics Canada for the estimation of Low-Income Cutoffs. Employing identical sample selection criteria and identically specified models, we find that equival...
