adenosine deaminase estimation in the diagnosis of tuberculous ascites. Reply SIR,-We acknowledge the pertinent points raised by Lingenfelser and Marks. When our paper was submitted we thought that the role of ascitic adenosine deaminase in the diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis'2 needed further investigation. Subsequent evaluations of ascitic adenosine deaminase in tuberculous peri-tonitis3'4 have shown high diagnostic sensitivities. We therefore accept that this determination is an important investigatory option in the diagnosis of peritoneal tuberculosis. The role of peritoneoscopy therefore seems to be limited to equivocal adenosine deaminase results where there is high clinical suspicion of tuber-culous peritonitis or cases where malignant ascites is suspected.

Effects of zinc deficiency/zinc supplementation on ammonia metabolism in patients with decompensated liver cirrhosis.

Hepatic encephalopathy is one of the major complications in decompensated liver cirrhosis. The current study was conducted to clarify the mechanisms of zinc deficiency in liver cirrhosis and its involvement in hepatic encephalopathy via ammonia metabolism. Ten patients each with compensated or decompensated liver cirrhosis and 11 healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. Serum zinc levels ...

The Prevalence and Implication of Zinc Deficiency in Patients With Chronic Liver Disease

Background Patients with liver cirrhosis often exhibit zinc deficiency. Although zinc is involved in many bioactivities, many aspects of clinical implications of zinc deficiency in liver cirrhosis remain unclear. We aimed to reveal the prevalence and implications of zinc deficiency in liver cirrhosis by assessing associations with parameters such as clinical symptoms and laboratory data. Meth...

The role of zinc in liver cirrhosis.

Zinc is an essential trace element playing fundamental roles in cellular metabolism. It acts mostly by binding a wide range of proteins, thus affecting a broad spectrum of biological processes, which include cell division, growth and differentiation. Zinc is critical to a large number of structural proteins, enzymatic processes, and transcription factors. Zinc deficiency can result in a spectru...

Associations between Zinc Deficiency and Metabolic Abnormalities in Patients with Chronic Liver Disease

Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace element which has favorable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and apoptotic effects. The liver mainly plays a crucial role in maintaining systemic Zn homeostasis. Therefore, the occurrence of chronic liver diseases, such as chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, or fatty liver, results in the impairment of Zn metabolism, and subsequently Zn deficiency. Zn deficiency c...

Effect of zinc supplementation in patients with type C liver cirrhosis

Zinc is often deficient in patients with liver cirrhosis, and treatment with zinc provides short-term improvement in protein metabolism. However, the long-term effects of zinc have not been fully clarified. The present study aimed to analyze the effect of zinc on the long-term clinical course, especially hepatocarcinogenesis, in type C liver cirrhosis. Among patients with type C liver cirrhosis...

Relation between zinc status and hepatic functional reserve in patients with liver disease.

Patients with liver disease may be at risk of zinc depletion. We measured polymorphonuclear cell, mononuclear cell, plasma, and erythrocyte zinc values, and erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase activity to assess zinc status in 17 patients with non-alcoholic liver disease (primary biliary cirrhosis and chronic active hepatitis) and 13 patients with alcoholic liver disease. The plasma zinc concentrati...
