Aerosol effects on global land surface energy fluxes during 2003–2010

چکیده
Aerosols affect downward solar radiation, impacting the terrestrial ecosystem carbon dynamics and energy budget. Here we apply a coupled modeling framework of a terrestrial ecosystem model and an atmospheric radiative transfer model to evaluate aerosol direct radiative effects on the surface heat fluxes of global terrestrial ecosystems during 2003–2010. We find that aerosol loadings decrease the mean latent heat flux by 2.4Wm 2 (or evapotranspiration by 28mm) and sensible heat flux by 16Wm . As a result, global mean soil moisture and water evaporative fraction have increased by 0.5% and 4%, respectively. Spatially, aerosol effects are significant in tropical forests and temperate broadleaf evergreen forests. This study is among the first quantifications of aerosols’ effects on the heat fluxes of the global terrestrial ecosystems. The study further suggests that both direct and indirect aerosol radiative effects through aerosol-cloud interactions should be considered to quantify the energy budget of the global terrestrial ecosystems.

Aerosol‐cloud semi‐direct effect and land‐sea temperature contrast in a GCM
[1] Simulations with the CAM3 climate model show that prescribed heating by anthropogenic aerosols significantly affects cloud cover. Globally the dominant effect is a decrease in mid‐level clouds, which contributes to a semi‐ direct effect (SDE) that warms the surface by 0.5 W m. The SDE negates some of the impact of absorbing aerosol on surface fluxes, up to 50% over the Northern Hemisphere e...

A novel method is introduced for integrating satellite-derived irrigation data and high-resolution crop-type information into a land surface model (LSM). The objective is to improve the simulation of land surface states and fluxes through better representation of agricultural land use. Ultimately, this scheme could enable numerical weather prediction (NWP) models to capture land–atmosphere feed...

10 Tibetan Plateau plays an important role in the Asian Monsoon and global general 11 circulation system. Due to the lack of quantitative observations and complicate cold 12 season processes in high elevation terrain, however, the land surface water and energy 13 budgets are still unexplored over this special region. In this study, the water and energy 14 balances are detail analyzed based...

متن کاملObtaining surface energy fluxes from remotely sensed data
Land surface fluxes have been estimated from remotely sensed data at high pixel resolutions (approximately 60 m) with reasonable accuracy when compared to ground measurements (French et al., 2003; Kustas and Norman, 1999). The remote sensing input used to model land surface fluxes may consist of land surface temperature and a vegetation index. Remotely sensed land surface temperature estimates ...
