Best Practices in Glass Recycling: Using Glass as a Blasting Abrasive
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Issue: Processed recycled glass has been sold as an abrasive blasting medium under several brand names in different parts of the United States. However, limited public information is available regarding the performance of finely sized crushed glass in abrasive applications because manufacturers have developed their own proprietary data. Historically, the predominant material used for abrasive blasting was silica sand, hence the common reference to “sandblasting.” Other media include garnet, staurolite and industrial by-products such as coal slag, copper slag, nickel slag and steel grit. Even walnut shells and plastic beads have been used for abrasive blasting. Individual abrasive media performance depends on hardness, shape, size, weight, and other characteristics. Healthconsiderations are sometimes significant in evaluating blasting abrasives. For example, concerns about silicosis due to the presence of crystalline silica have resulted in very little silica sand now being used in abrasive blasting.

متن کاملAn Experimental Study on the Fabrication of Glass-based Acceleration Sensor Body Using Micro Powder Blasting Method
This study investigated the feasibility of the micro powder blasting technique for the micro fabrication of sensor structures using the Pyrex glass to replace the existing silicon-based acceleration sensor fabrication processes. As the preliminary experiments, the effects of the blasting pressure, the mass flow rate of abrasive and the number of nozzle scanning times on erosion depth of the Pyr...
متن کاملMicro Fluidic Channel Machining on Fused Silica Glass Using Powder Blasting
In this study, micro fluid channels are machined on fused silica glass via powder blasting, a mechanical etching process, and the machining characteristics of the channels are experimentally evaluated. In the process, material removal is performed by the collision of micro abrasives injected by highly compressed air on to the target surface. This approach can be characterized as an integration ...
متن کاملSandblasting under uncontrolled and primitive conditions in Turkey.
Abrasive blasting involves forcefully projecting a stream of abrasive particles onto a surface, usually with compressed air or steam. Since silica sand is commonly used in this process, workers who perform abrasive blasting are often called sandblasters. A material with rough particles should be used in order to have a sufficient effect on resistant surfaces such as glass or metal. Mostly quart...
متن کاملExposure to crystalline silica in abrasive blasting operations where silica and non-silica abrasives are used.
Exposure to respirable crystalline silica is a hazard common to many industries in Alberta but particularly so in abrasive blasting. Alberta occupational health and safety legislation requires the consideration of silica substitutes when conducting abrasive blasting, where reasonably practicable. In this study, exposure to crystalline silica during abrasive blasting was evaluated when both sili...
