Forest cover trends from time series Landsat data for the Australian continent

چکیده
In perennial and natural vegetation systems, monitoring changes in vegetation over time is of fundamental interest for identifying and quantifying impacts of management and natural processes. Subtle changes in vegetation cover can be identified by calculating the trends of a vegetation density index over time. In this paper, we apply such an index-trends approach, which has been developed and applied to time series Landsat imagery in rangeland and woodland environments, to continental-scale monitoring of disturbances within forested regions of Australia. This paper describes the operational methods used for the generation of National Forest Trend (NFT) information, which is a time-series summary providing visual indication of withinforest vegetation changes (disturbance and recovery) over time at 25m resolution. This result is based on a national archive of calibrated Landsat TM/ETM+ data from 1989 to 2006 produced for Australia’s National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS). The NCAS was designed in 1999 initially to provide consistent fine-scale classifications for monitoring forest cover extent and changes (i.e. land use change) over the Australian continent using time series Landsat imagery. NFT information identifies more subtle changes within forested areas and provides a capacity to identify processes affecting forests which are of primary interest to ecologists and land managers.

Derivation of a Perennial Vegetation Density Map for the Australian Continent
Multi-temporal Landsat coverages of the entire Australian continent have been assembled under the Australian Greenhouse Office (AGO) National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS) Land Cover Change Program. The major purpose of this program was the production of spatially detailed classifications of the extent and change in area of forest cover for Australia since 1972 for input to carbon modelling. ...

The Australian Government’s National Carbon Accounting System (NCAS) was developed to report land sector greenhouse gas emissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its Kyoto Protocol. NCAS uses a national wall-to-wall time-series of Landsat (optical) satellite data from 1972 to 2010. Independent verification has shown that the analysis can generate a stab...
متن کاملEvaluation of Alternative Sensors for a “landsat-based” Monitoring Program
In Australia, Landsat imagery is currently used in a number of regional and national monitoring projects to provide maps of the extent and change in area of perennial vegetation. They provide basic information for conservation, land management and for modelling carbon flux and water use. With the looming gap in Landsat data continuity it is timely to consider the issues involved in using data f...
متن کاملQuantifying Multi-Decadal Change of Planted Forest Cover Using Airborne LiDAR and Landsat Imagery
Continuous monitoring of forest cover condition is key to understanding the carbon dynamics of forest ecosystems. This paper addresses how to integrate single-year airborne LiDAR and time-series Landsat imagery to derive forest cover change information. LiDAR data were used to extract forest cover at the sub-pixel level of Landsat for a single year, and the Landtrendr algorithm was applied to L...
متن کاملIntroducing the improved Forest Canopy density (FCD) model for frequent assessment of Hyrcanian forest
Mapping of forest extent is a prerequisite to acquire quantitative and qualitative information about forests and to formulate management and conservation strategies. forest canopy density (FCD) model is one of the useful RS methods for forest mapping using satellite images. One of the most serious challenges in FCD model is the weakness in the calculation of canopy density in low density forest...
