A Plastic Path-following Method That Handles the Continuous Spreading of Elastic Unloading

چکیده
This work deals with the numerical determination of equilibrium paths in geometrically and physically non-linear problems. The aim of this paper is to propose, present the formulation and illustrate the application of a path-following method which is able to handle the continuous spreading of elastic unloading and, therefore, is particularly well suited to solve plastic buckling problems. The proposed method involves an incremental solution technique characterized by (i) the use of both the configuration quantities and their rates as independent variables, (ii) the simultaneous solution of the total and incremental equilibrium equations and (iii) the definition of an estimated configuration history throughout an increment, on the basis of the initial and final values of the configuration quantities and their rates. In order to clarify the concepts introduced and to illustrate the application and capabilities of the path-following method formulated, a study of the buckling behaviour of an elastic-plastic column is presented. It is shown that, for the numerical example analysed, the implementation of the proposed solution technique always leads to more accurate results than the ones yielded by a standard technique. Finite element analysis of elastic-plastic solids under Vickers indentation: surface deformation
Finite element modeling has been used to study the development of surface deformation during indentation with a Vickers indenter. A wide range of materials with different elastic modulus and yield stresses are examined. Results show that in a pyramidal indentation process, for a perfectly plastic material, sinking-in during loading can change to pile-up in unloading. This phenomenon depends on ...
متن کاملOn Analytic Solutions of Elastic Net Displacements around a Circular Tunnel
Displacements around a tunnel, occurring as a result of excavation, consist of the elastic and plastic parts. In this paper, we discuss the elastic part of displacements as a result of excavation, called net displacement. In general, the previous analytical solutions presented for determining the displacements around a circular tunnel in an elastic medium do not give the net displacements...
متن کاملDevelopment of a Predictive Finite Element Model For Investigation of Phases Behavior After Cold Rolling Process
One of the surface defects that arise in sheet metal working is when the part removes from the die. Since there are no external forces to make this defect, the origin of such fail is known as residual stress. Residual stress can develop in sheet metal forming due to non uniform deformation. In this paper, the workpiece is carbon steel with different volume fractions and arrangement of ferrite ...
متن کاملEffect of Strain Hardening on Unloading of a Deformable Sphere Loaded against a Rigid Flat – A Finite Element Study
The present study considers an elastic-plastic contact analysis during loading-unloading of a deformable sphere with a rigid flat using finite element method. The effect of strain hardening on the contact behavior of a nonadhesive frictionless elastic-plastic contact is analyzed using commercial finite element software ANSYS. To study the strain hardening effect different values of tangent modu...

Thermo-Elasto-Plastic analyses of thick-walled spherical tanks made of functionally graded materials are investigated analytically. These tanks are subjected to positive or negative temperature gradient and internal pressure loadings separately or simultaneously. The power law modeling has been used for through-the-thickness variation of mechanical properties. von Mises yield criterion and Elas...
