A Statistical Mechanical View of Kalman Filtering

چکیده

We develop a physical analogy for the Kalman-Bucy filter, in which the partially observed signal describes a statistical mechanical system interacting with a heat bath. The ‘universe’ comprising this system and the heat bath obeys a non-decrease law of entropy similar to the Second Law of Thermodynamics. However, this law can be violated in the presence of partial observations. Like Maxwell’s demon, the filter uses observations to extract work from the signal, thus ‘cooling’ it, but without causing any increase in entropy. The analogy provides a quantitative example of Landauer’s Principle. Further analogies and generalisations are briefly mentioned.

On-Line Nonlinear Dynamic Data Reconciliation Using Extended Kalman Filtering: Application to a Distillation Column and a CSTR

Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) is a nonlinear dynamic data reconciliation (NDDR) method. One of its main advantages is its suitability for on-line applications. This paper presents an on-line NDDR method using EKF. It is implemented for two case studies, temperature measurements of a distillation column and concentration measurements of a CSTR. In each time step, random numbers with zero m...

GPS/INS Integration for Vehicle Navigation based on INS Error Analysis in Kalman Filtering

The Global Positioning System (GPS) and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) are two basic navigation systems. Due to their complementary characters in many aspects, a GPS/INS integrated navigation system has been a hot research topic in the recent decade. The Micro Electrical Mechanical Sensors (MEMS) successfully solved the problems of price, size and weight with the traditional INS. Therefore...

On Line Electric Power Systems State Estimation Using Kalman Filtering (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper principles of extended Kalman filtering theory is developed and applied to simulated on-line electric power systems state estimation in order to trace the operating condition changes through the redundant and noisy measurements. Test results on IEEE 14 - bus test system are included. Three case systems are tried; through the comparing of their results, it is concluded that the pro...

Bayesian Nonlinear Filtering via Information Geometric Optimization

In this paper, Bayesian nonlinear filtering is considered from the viewpoint of information geometry and a novel filtering method is proposed based on information geometric optimization. Under the Bayesian filtering framework, we derive a relationship between the nonlinear characteristics of filtering and the metric tensor of the corresponding statistical manifold. Bayesian joint distributions ...

An Elementary Introduction to Kalman Filtering

Kalman filtering is a classic state estimation technique used widely in engineering applications such as statistical signal processing and control of vehicles. It is now being used to solve problems in computer systems, such as controlling the voltage and frequency of processors to minimize energy while meeting throughput requirements. Although there are many presentations of Kalman filtering i...
