A Market for Lemons: Maize in Kenya*

چکیده
Information asymmetries are a well-recognized impediment to market efficiency. When quality is not observable by prospective buyers, the quality of marketed goods will suffer, and the volume of trade will be depressed. Using data from more than 2,000 maize samples collected in four Kenyan provinces, we show that the presence of aflatoxin, an invisible and dangerous fungal contaminant, is not reflected in maize prices but does affect how maize is used. Specifically, the level of contamination with aflatoxin is higher in grain that is used for production of alcoholic beverages or sold compared to that which is retained by farmers for their own consumption. We argue that this apparent market failure reduces the quality of maize available on the market. In addition, it may increase farmers’ reliance on subsistence crops relative to higher-value cash crops, thus reducing farm incomes. JEL codes: O12, O13, O15

Combining Ability among Twenty Insect Resistant Maize inbred lines Resistant to Chilo partellus and Busseola fusca Stem borers
A partial diallel design was used among 20 maize inbred lines to form 110 F1 hybrids to generate information on the values of these lines for developing insect resistant maize varieties during the short rains season of 2006. The hybrids were evaluated for resistance to the C. partellus and B. fusca, and for agronomic performance over two seasons during long and short rains of 2007 at a mid-alti...
متن کاملMaize productivity and nutrient use efficiency in Western Kenya as affected by soil type and crop management
Low soil fertility and high weed infestation are the main culprits for the declining maize production inWestern Kenya. Technology packages to address these constraints exist, but their effectiveness is likely to be influenced by variability in soil types and farm management practices in the region. Trials were conducted during the 2008/2009 cropping seasons to investigate the nutrient use e...
متن کاملAflatoxin Contamination of Commercial Maize Products during an Outbreak of Acute Aflatoxicosis in Eastern and Central Kenya
In April 2004, one of the largest aflatoxicosis outbreaks occurred in rural Kenya, resulting in 317 cases and 125 deaths. Aflatoxin-contaminated homegrown maize was the source of the outbreak, but the extent of regional contamination and status of maize in commercial markets (market maize) were unknown. We conducted a cross-sectional survey to assess the extent of market maize contamination and...

Parasitism by Striga hermonthica (Del) Benth is a severe constraint in maizeproduction in sub-Saharan Africa. Varying levels of tolerance to Striga attack havebeen identified and exploited in breeding programs of several crops. However, thelevel and stability of the tolerance is generally unacceptable in field-practice. Onlylimited exploration has been undertaken among the farmers’ landraces to...
متن کاملEffects of field conditions, low nitrogen and drought on genetic parameters of protein and tryptophan concentrations in grain of quality protein maize
Quality Protein Maize (QPM) has about twice the amount of lysine and tryptophan of normal maize and hence represents an important tool of correcting its deficiency in protein quality. However, the effects of low nitrogen and drought on genetic parameters such as gene action and combining abilities of protein quantity and quality of QPM are not known. To study how these genetic parameters are af...
