The Tilted Solar Magnetic Dipole

چکیده

Astrophysical bodies often have magnetic axes not aligned with their rotational axes. For instance, the magnetic axes of Earth and Uranus have tilt angles of 11 ̊ and 60 ̊ with respect to their rotational axes. The Earth’s magnetic field is attributed to interactions between the solid iron core, the outer molten core, and planetary rotation (Coe and Glatzmaier, 2006). Modeling shows that the same process (convection in a rotating shell of conducting fluid) can explain all dynamo-generated magnetic fields (Stanley and Bloxham, 2004). Another explanation is a primordial magnetic field, i.e., an axis direction ‘frozen in’ during formation.

The 13.5-day periodicity in the Sun, solar wind, and geomagnetic activity: The last three solar cycles

We make a detailed analysis of the 13.5-day periodicity of the solar chromosphere, the nearEarth solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field and geomagnetic activity during the last three solar cycles. The 13.5-day periodicity is a real quasi-periodicity whose amplitude varies sizably with time, attaining occasionally values larger than, for example, the amplitude of the 27-day periodicity. In ca...

Saturnian magnetospheric dynamics: Elucidation of a camshaft model

[1] Periodic modulation of magnetospheric phenomena at Earth and Jupiter results principally from the tilt of the dipole axis relative to the rotation axis. Saturn’s nearly aligned dipole moment is tilted by less than 0.5 from the spin axis, yet the power of radiofrequency emissions, the orientation of the magnetic field, and many properties of the magnetospheric plasma vary periodically at the...

Comparative Analysis of Two Formation Scenarios of Bursty Radio Emission from Ultracool Dwarfs

Recently, a number of ultracool dwarfs have been found to produce periodic radio bursts with high brightness temperature and polarization degree; the emission properties are similar to the auroral radio emissions of the magnetized planets of the Solar System. We simulate the dynamic spectra of radio emission from ultracool dwarfs. The emission is assumed to be generated due to the electroncyclo...

The Effects of an Imposed Magnetic Field on Natural Convection in a Tilted Cavity with Partially Active Vertical Walls:Numerical Approach

The effect of imposed magnetic field on natural convection in a tilted cavity with partially active walls was investigated numerically. The active part of the right side wall was at a higher temperature than the active part of the left side wall and were moving on vertical walls relative to each other. The top, the bottom and the remaining parts of the side walls were insulated. The magnetic fi...

Reversals of the solar magnetic dipole in the light of observational data and simple dynamo models

Context. Observations show that the photospheric solar magnetic dipole usually does not vanish during the reversal of the solar magnetic field, which occurs in each solar cycle. In contrast, mean-field solar dynamo models predict that the dipole field does become zero. In a recent paper it was suggested that this contradiction could be explained as a large-scale manifestation of small-scale mag...
