چکیده

349 The potential health benefits of soy, and the soy isoflavones in particular, are widely publicized. Although soy and soy isoflavones exhibit both risks and benefits (1,2), in this article we focus on the thyroid toxicity of genistein. Genistein is the major isoflavone synthesized by the soybean; genistein possesses both estrogenic and goitrogenic activities. The claimed benefits of genistein are being examined in numerous experimental, epidemiologic, and clinical studies investigating breast and prostate cancer chemoprevention, relief of postmenopausal symptoms, and prevention or slowing of osteoporosis. Here, we first present a brief summary of the estrogenic activity and toxicity of genistein and then explore the potential for thyroid toxicity of these chemicals, both from a historical perspective and from data reported from recent investigations on the mechanisms of potential toxicity. We also integrate research results on isoflavone thyroid effects in a manner useful for predicting and identifying potential risks from soy consumption in various human populations.

Determination of the isoflavone composition and estrogenic activity of commercial dietary supplements based on soy or red clover.

Dietary supplements high in isolated isoflavones are commercially available for human consumption primarily to alleviate menopausal symptoms in women. The isoflavone composition, quantity and importantly their estrogenic potency are poorly standardised and can vary considerably between different products. The aim of this study was to analyse the isoflavone composition of 11 dietary supplements ...

Effect of Different Doses of Soy Isoflavones on Spatial Learning and Memory in Ovariectomized Rats

Introduction: Several studies indicate that estrogen use increase performance on some tests of cognition especially in postmenopausal women. These steroids have many side effects, thus, other estrogenic agents with fewer side effects are needed to develop alternative treatment strategies. The main objection of this study was to evaluate the effects of different doses of dietary soy meals (with ...

Dietary soy containing phytoestrogens does not have detectable estrogenic effects on hepatic protein synthesis in postmenopausal women.

BACKGROUND Dietary phytoestrogens are ligands for the estrogen receptor and may mimic estrogenic effects in vivo. OBJECTIVE To assess the biological activity of isoflavone phytoestrogens, we analyzed the effect of dietary soy isoflavone supplementation on in vivo bioassays of estrogenicity. DESIGN Fifty healthy postmenopausal women aged 50-75 y participated in a double-blind, placebo-contro...

Assessment of isoflavone aglycones variability in soy food supplements using a validated HPLC-UV method

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Soy supplements are often recommended in the management of menopause symptoms. The declared content of soy supplements is commonly expressed as total isoflavones per dosage form. Given that soy isoflavones have different estrogenic potencies, pharmacokinetics and metabolism, the aim of this study was to evaluate the total isoflavone content and the aglycone profile of seven ...
