Submit Manuscript | http://medcraveonline.com J Investig Genomics 2015, 2(5): 00036 Ageing unavoidably leads to a drop in physical performance, disturbances in the overall physiology, steady senescence and finally to death. And though it is deeply rooted in our conscience that this is an unavoidable process we should not forget that there are organisms that exhibit negligible senescence and have a very prolonged lifespan. Species like the red sea urchin, some turtles, the naked mole rat and several others are examples for long living organisms and commonly are under extensive studies in order to reveal the most intimate molecular and cellular mechanisms which permit them to live longer. To understand the ability to delay the onset of ageing and moreover to find the mechanisms for combating age-associated diseases like cancer, dementia, respiratory disease, heart disease, etc. has been and always will be a good motivation for many scientific endeavours in the field.

Metabolic Networks of Longevity

Molecular and cellular networks implicated in aging depend on a multitude of proteins that collectively mount adaptive and contingent metabolic responses to environmental challenges. Here, we discuss the intimate links between metabolic regulation and longevity and outline new approaches for analyzing and manipulating such links to promote human health span.

Neuronal ROS signaling rather than AMPK/sirtuin-mediated energy sensing links dietary restriction to lifespan extension.

Dietary restriction (DR) extends lifespan and promotes metabolic health in evolutionary distinct species. DR is widely believed to promote longevity by causing an energy deficit leading to increased mitochondrial respiration. We here show that inhibitors of mitochondrial complex I promote physical activity, stress resistance as well as lifespan of Caenorhabditis elegans despite normal food upta...

Levels and location are crucial in determining the effect of ROS on lifespan

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause molecular damage that accumulates with age and have been proposed to be one of the primary causes of aging. However, recent work indicates that ROS have beneficial roles in an organism and that the relationship between ROS and aging is complex. We have shown that increasing ROS levels or oxidative damage does not necessarily lead to decreased lifespan. We hav...

Molecular genetic control of leaf lifespan in plants - A review

Leaf senescence constitutes the last stage of leaf development in plants and proceeds through a highly regulated program in order to redistribution of micro- and macro-nutrients from the senescing leaves to the developing/growing plant organs. Initiation and progression of leaf senescence is accompanied by massive sequential alterations at various levels of leaf biology including leaf morpholog...

Artificial Neural Networks Analysis Used to Evaluate the Molecular Interactions between Selected Drugs and Human Cyclooxygenase2 Receptor

Objective(s): A fast and reliable evaluation of the binding energy from a single conformation of a molecular complex is an important practical task. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are strong tools for predicting nonlinear functions which are used in this paper to predict binding energy. We proposed a structure that obtains binding energy using physicochemical molecular descripti...
