Relics of Double Radio Sources

چکیده

We have formed a new sample which consists of extended extragalactic radio sources without obvious active galactic nuclei (AGN) in them. Most of these sources appear to be dead double radio sources. These sources with steep spectra (α < -1.8; S ∝ ν) were identified using the 74 (VLSS) and the 1400 MHz (NVSS) surveys and further imaged using the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Giant Meterwave RadioTelescope (GMRT). The radio morphologies of these sources are rather unusual in the sense that no obvious cores and jets are detected in these sources, but, two extended lobes are detected in most. The mean redshift of 4 of the 10 sources reported here is ∼ 0.2. At a redshift of 0.2, the linear extents of the sources in the current sample are ∼ 250 kpc with their spectral luminosities at 1.4 GHz in the range 2-25 x 10 W Hz. The steep spectra of these sources is a result of the cessation of AGN activities in them about 15 – 100 million years ago. Before the cessation of AGN activity, the radio luminosities of these galaxies were ∼ 1000 times brighter than their current luminosities and would have been comparable to those of the brightest active radio galaxies detected in the local universe (L1.4 ∼ 10 27 W Hz). The dead radio galaxies reported here represent the tip of the iceberg and quantifying the abundance of such a population has important implications to the life cycle of the AGN. Subject headings: galaxies: active — galaxies: halos — galaxies: high-redshift — radiation mechanisms: non-thermal — radio continuum: galaxies

Radio observations of ZwCl 2341.1+0000: a double radio relic cluster

Context. Hierarchal models of large scale structure (LSS) formation predict that galaxy clusters grow via gravitational infall and mergers of (smaller) mass concentrations, such as clusters and galaxy groups. Diffuse radio emission, in the form of radio halos and relics, is found in clusters undergoing a merger, indicating that shocks or turbulence associated with the merger are capable of acce...

Radio Relics in Clusters of Galaxies

In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster condition...

Double Relics in Abell 2345 and Abell 1240 spectral index and polarization analysis

Aims. The aim of the present work is to study the radio properties of double relics in Abell 1240 and Abell 2345 in the framework of double relic formation models. Methods. We present new Very Large Array observations at 20 and 90 cm for these two clusters. We performed spectral index and polarization analysis and compared our results with expectations from theoretical models. Results. The pres...

Radio relics in a cosmological cluster merger simulation

Motivated by the discovery of a number of radio relics we investigate the fate of fossil radio plasma during a merger of clusters of galaxies using cosmological smoothedparticle hydrodynamics simulations. Radio relics are extended, steep-spectrum radio sources that do not seem to be associated with a host galaxy. One proposed scenario whereby these relics form is through the compression of foss...

radio emission from the Intracluster medium

An important aspect of the radio emission from galaxy clusters is represented by the diffuse radio sources associated with the intracluster medium: radio halos, relics and mini-halos. The radio halos and relics are indicators of cluster mergers, whereas mini-halos are detected at the center of cooling core clusters. SKA will dramatically improve the knowledge of these sources, thanks to the det...
