Multi-objective assessment of conservation measures for the European eel (Anguilla anguilla): an application to the Camargue lagoons

چکیده
The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) stock has declined since the early 1970s and is currently considered to be outside safe biological limits. The European Commission has proposed a regulation (COM 2005/472 final) to establish measures for the recovery of the stock, with the aim of achieving an escapement to the sea of 40% of the adult eel biomass (with respect to undisturbed conditions) from each river basin. The proposed regulation imposes an effective reduction of fishing activities until implementation of an approved eel management plan. We use a demographic model, explicitly accounting for age, length, and sex structure, and important features of the continental phase of eel life cycle, to assess the effectiveness of the proposed regulation. We explore alternative management options with reference to the Camargue (southern France) eel population. Using multi-criteria methods, we compare different fishing policies with respect to two potentially conflicting objectives: preserving a sufficient spawner escapement and guaranteeing an acceptable harvest to fishers. We show that the current fishery is inefficient and that appropriate management policies (such as limiting the fishing season and increasing the mesh size of fishing gear) are likely to have a doubly positive effect, by achieving the conservation target of the regulation and increasing fisher revenues.

Bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls in the eel (Anguilla anguilla) at the Camargue Nature Reserve - France.
Fish consumption is a potential source of human exposure to pollutants. Here, we study residue levels of PCBs in the eel, Anguilla anguilla, from the Nature Camargue Reserve in southern France. Chromatographic analysis (GC-ECD) found seventy identifiable congeners, among which, 10 are considered as dioxin-like PCBs, such as the non-ortho PCB 81 and the mono-ortho chlorobiphenyls PCB105, 114, 11...
متن کاملViral diseases of wild and farmed European eel Anguilla anguilla with particular reference to the Netherlands.
Diseases are an important cause of losses and decreased production rates in freshwater eel farming, and have been suggested to play a contributory role in the worldwide decline in wild freshwater eel stocks. Three commonly detected pathogenic viruses of European eel Anguilla anguilla are the aquabirnavirus eel virus European (EVE), the rhabdovirus eel virus European X (EVEX), and the alloherpes...
متن کاملMaximal oxygen consumption increases with temperature in the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) through increased heart rate and arteriovenous extraction
Global warming results in increasing water temperature, which may represent a threat to aquatic ectotherms. The rising temperature affects ecology through physiology, by exerting a direct limiting effect on the individual. The mechanism controlling individual thermal tolerance is still elusive, but some evidence shows that the heart plays a central role, and that insufficient transport of oxyge...
متن کاملDietary eVects on multi-element composition of European eel (Anguilla anguilla) otoliths
Otolith microchemistry is widely used as a tool to track individual migration pathways of diadromous Wsh under the assumption that the elemental composition of Wsh otoliths is directly inXuenced by the physicochemical properties of the surrounding water. Nevertheless, several endogenous factors are reported to aVect element incorporation into Wsh otoliths and might lead to misinterpretations of...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of 12 dinucleotide microsatellites in the European eel, Anguilla anguilla L., and tests of amplification in other species of eels.
Twelve polymorphic dinucelotide microsatellites in the freshwater eel Anguilla anguilla L. were isolated and characterized. Genetic diversity was assessed in eels from Lake Constance, Germany. Allele numbers ranged from five to 26 per locus with observed heterozygosities between 0.125 and 0.875. A portion of locus AangCT77 aligns with a transcribed region of the zebrafish gene crystallin beta B...
