ICESat validation of SRTM C-band digital elevation models

چکیده
[1] The Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) on the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) provides a globally-distributed data set well suited for evaluating the vertical accuracy of Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation models (DEMs). The horizontal error (2.4 ± 7.3 m) and vertical error (0.04 ± 0.13 m per degree of incidence angle) for the ICESat data used are small compared to those for SRTM. Using GLAS echo waveforms we document differences between the SRTM C-band phase center and the highest, centroid, and lowest elevations within ICESat laser footprints in the western United States. In areas of low relief and sparse tree cover, the mean and standard deviation of elevation differences between the ICESat centroid and SRTM are 0.60 ± 3.46 m. The differences are 5.61 ± 15.68 m in high relief, sparse tree cover areas, and 3.53 ± 8.04 m in flat areas with dense tree cover. The largest differences occur in rugged, denselyvegetated regions. Effects of Digital Elevation Models (DEM) Spatial Resolution on Hydrological Simulation
Digital Elevation Model is one of the most important data for watershed modeling whit hydrological models that it has a significant impact on hydrological processes simulation. Several studies by the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) as useful Tool have indicated that the simulation results of this model is very sensitive to the quality of topographic data. The aim of this study is evaluati...

State of the Problem Lidar remote sensing provides measurements of horizontal and vertical vegetation structure of ecosystems which will be critical for estimating global carbon storage and assessing ecosystem response to climate change and natural and anthropogenic disturbances. However, no consistent approach currently exists to derive the lidar based vegetation structure information required...
متن کاملICESat/GLAS Data as a Measurement Tool for Peatland Topography and Peat Swamp Forest Biomass in Kalimantan, Indonesia
Indonesian peatlands are one of the largest near-surface pools of terrestrial organic carbon. Persistent logging, drainage and recurrent fires lead to huge emission of carbon each year. Since tropical peatlands are highly inaccessible, few measurements on peat depth and forest biomass are available. We assessed the applicability of quality filtered ICESat/GLAS (a spaceborne LiDAR system) data t...
متن کاملProducing digital elevation models with uncertainty estimates using a multi-scale Kalman filter
The Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) digital elevation data provides near-global coverage at about 90 m resolution and in much of the world is now the best available topographic data. Its application for quantitative analysis is limited by random noise and systematic offsets due to vegetation. This paper describes a multiscale Kalman smoothing algorithm for removing vegetation effects a...
متن کاملAccuracy Enhancement of ASTER Global Digital Elevation Models Using ICESat Data
Global Digital Elevation Models (GDEM) are considered very attractive for current research and application areas due to their free and wide range accessibility. The ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model exhibits the highest spatial resolution data of all global DEMs and it is generated for almost the whole globe. Unfortunately, ASTER GDEM data include many artifacts and height errors that decrea...
