By means of two perception experiments, we investigate the role of two major formal conditions in the interpretation of Double Negation in Catalan and Spanish answers to negative wh-questions: (a) their intonation; and (b) their syntactic structure, which contain n-words such as Catalan ningú ‘nobody’ or Spanish nada ‘nothing’. The results reveal that (i) syntax and prosody interact: prosodic contours enhance processing of syntactic structures; (ii) isolated and preverbal n-words may convey DN interpretations when associated with a special intonation; and (iii) Catalan and Spanish hearers show

Author's personal copy Prosody and gesture constrain the interpretation of double negation
The phenomenon of double negation (DN), by which two negative elements negate each other in such a way that a positive interpretation is obtained, has traditionally been considered in terms of its syntactic and semantic grammatical properties. Yet, correlated prosodic and gestural features exist, such as specific pitch contours and gestures which potentially affect listeners in the speech act c...
متن کاملIntonational encoding of double negation in Catalan
In this paper we shall explore the phenomenon of double negation (DN) in a negative concord language like Catalan from an inferential perspective. According to recent developments within the generative approach to the theory of sentential grammar, a proper account of this phenomenon requires an analysis of the lexical, syntactic, and semantic conditions involved. Yet this model only attempts to...
متن کاملContextual and Prosodic Disambiguation of French Concord and Discord
Introduction. Although commonly classified as a Negative Concord (NC) language since it readily allows single negation readings of Negative Concord Items (NCI) sequences (1c), French has widely been acknowledged to also tolerate Double Negation (DN) or Negative Discord, albeit as a marked option (De Swart, Corblin, 1996). This DN tolerance, diagnosed by Zeijlstra (2004) as a symptom of the stil...
متن کاملWord prosody in early child Catalan, Spanish and English
The goal of this study is to examine the acquisition of prosody at the word level in early child Catalan, Spanish and English. We used a controlled naming task to elicit speech from 36 children; 12 English, 12 Catalan, and 12 Spanish, aged 2, 4 and 6 in order to analyze the acquisition of prosodic words with increasingly complex forms (S, WS, SW, WSW, SWW, WWS, SWSW; 3 target words per prosodic...
متن کاملSpeech rhythm as durational marking of prosodic heads and edges. Evidence from Catalan, English, and Spanish
Data from a total of 24 speakers reading 720 utterances from Catalan, English, and Spanish show that differences in rhythm metrics emerge even when syllable structure and vowel reduction are controlled for in the experimental materials, strongly suggesting that important differences in timing exist in these languages, and thus that the rhythmic percept is not solely dependent on these two phono...
