چکیده
We have observed the optical pulse profile of PSR B0656+14 in 10 phase bins at a high signal-to-noise ratio, and have measured the linear polarization profile over 30% of the pulsar period with some significance. The pulse profile is double-peaked, with a bridge of emission between the two peaks, similar to gamma-ray profiles observed in other pulsars. There is no detectable unpulsed flux, to a 1-σ limit of 16% of the pulse-averaged flux. The emission in the bridge is highly (∼ 100%) polarized, with a position angle sweep in excellent agreement with the prediction of the Rotating Vector Model as determined from radio polarization observations. We are able to account for the gross features of the optical light curve (i.e., the phase separation of the peaks) using both polar cap and outer gap models. Using the polar cap model, we are also able to estimate the height of the optical emission regions.

We have carried out a survey for ‘giant pulses’ in 5 millisecond pulsars. We detect individual pulses from the high Ė pulsar PSR B1821−24 with energies exceeding 50× the mean pulse energy. These giant pulses are concentrated in a narrow phase window coincident with the power-law non-thermal pulse seen in hard X-rays. This is the third example of the giant pulse phenomenon. It supports the idea ...

HST observations have contributed significantly to our knowledge on the behaviour of Isolated Neutron Stars (INSs) as optical emitters. First, HST has been instrumental both to discover new optical counterparts (PSR B1055-52, PSR B1929+10, PSR B0950+08) and to confirm proposed identifications (PSR B0656+14). Second, HST multicolor photometry provided useful information to characterize the optic...

Analysis of both pulse timing and pulse shape variations of the isolated pulsar PSR B1828-11 shows highly correlated and strong Fourier power at periods ≃ 1000, 500, 250, and 167 d (Stairs et al. 2000). The only description based on a free precession of star’s rigid crust coupled to the magnetic dipole torque, explains the 500-component, as the fundamental Fourier frequency, with its harmonic 2...

We present the result of astrometric observations of the radio pulsar PSR B0656+14, made using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax of the pulsar is π = 3.47± 0.36 mas, yielding a distance 288 −27 pc. This independent distance estimate has been used to constrain existing models of thermal x-ray emission from the neutron star’s photosphere. Simple blackbody fits to the x-ray data formally ...
متن کاملThe extreme radio emission of PSR B 0656 + 14 — Is B 0656 + 14 a very nearby Rotating Radio Transient ?
We present a detailed study of the single radio pulses of PSR B0656+14. The emission can be characterized by two separate populations of pulses: bright pulses have a narrow " spiky " appearance in contrast to the underlying weaker broad pulses. The shape of the pulse profile requires an unusually long timescale to achieve stability (over 25,000 pulses at 327 MHz) caused by spiky emission. The e...
