Introduction of the arc-length continuation technique in the chemical engineering graduate program at KFUPM

چکیده
The present paper describes the arc-length continuation method; a mathematical technique that can solve a wide variety of chemical engineering problems. Several case studies involving distillation, reaction engineering, and thermodynamics are treated with the help of this method. The approach is powerful enough to elucidate situations when several turning points occur. Finally, the authors concludewith their experience teaching this technique. Indeed, this methodology was introduced to the graduate students of the nonlinear dynamics course at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM). 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Chebyshev orthogonal collocation technique to solve transport phenomena problems with Matlab® and Mathematica
We present in this pedagogical paper an alternative numerical method for the resolution of transport phenomena problems encountered in the teaching of the required course on transport phenomena in the graduate chemical engineering curricula. Based on the Chebyshev orthogonal collocation technique implemented in Matlab and Mathematica , we show how different rather complicated transport phenomen...

متن کاملEstimation of Concentrations in Chemical Systems at Equilibrium Using Geometric Programming
Geometric programming is a mathematical technique, which has been developed for nonlinear optimization problems. This technique is based on the dual program with linear constraints. Determination of species concentrations in chemical equilibrium conditions is one of its applications in chemistry and chemical engineering fields. In this paper, the principles of geometric programming and its comp...
متن کاملNonlinear energy harvesting through a multimodal electro-mechanical system
A semi-analytical method is used to illustrate the behavior of a multimodal nonlinear electromechanical system which is under base-excitation. System is considered as piezo-ceramic patches attached to a cantilever beam coupled to a resistive load. The cantilever beam is modeled as a nonlinear Timoshenko beam using Assumed Mode method and equations of motion are derived through Lagrange's equati...
متن کاملTrial Chemical Grouting in Filter Materials at the Karkheh Dam Site, Iran
A sodium silicate-based chemical grout was used in the Karkheh dam site in order to examine the performance of the chemical grouting technique for stabilization of the dam's filter material. Karkheh, an embankment dam with the reservoir capacity of about 7.4 billion cubic meter at the maximum water level, is the largest dam in Iran. The grouting works performed at the dam site, were part of the...
