چکیده
BARROW QUARTERLY • Vol. 20, No. 4 • 2004 Acoustic Neuromas: Symptoms and Diagnosis A understanding of the clinical manifestations of acoustic neuromas is essential for diagnosis. Once this lesion is suspected, the appropriate diagnostic tests are vital for treatment planning and pretreatment discussions with the patient. This article reviews the clinical presentation and diagnostic evaluation of acoustic neuromas.

Acoustic neuromas (AN) are schwann cell-derived tumors that commonly arise from the vestibular portion of the eighth cranial nerve also known as vestibular schwannoma(VS) causes unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and unsteadiness. In many cases, the tumor size may remain unchanged for many years following diagnosis, which is typically made by MRI. In the majority of cases the tumor is s...
متن کاملAnalysis of results of complete and partial removal of acoustic neuromas.
Out of a total of 3,265 brain tumours verified in Professor Olivecrona's clinic up to December 31, 1946, there were 305 unilateral acoustic neuromas, (9-30%). In addition six bilateral acoustic neuromas and four neuromas of the trigeminal nerve were verified. Looking back over 24 years, Professor Olivecrona remarked on the improvements in technique which lightened the surgeon's burden. The real...
متن کاملAcoustic neuromas following childhood radiation treatment for benign conditions of the head and neck.
Childhood radiation exposure has been associated with an increased risk for developing several neoplasms, particularly benign and malignant thyroid tumors, but little is known about the risk of developing acoustic neuromas. The aim of this study was to confirm whether there is a risk for acoustic neuromas and, if so, to determine its magnitude and duration. We investigated the time trend and do...
متن کاملThe sensitivity of auditory brainstem response testing for the diagnosis of acoustic neuromas.
OBJECTIVES To determine the sensitivity of auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing for detecting acoustic neuromas and to determine whether the test is less sensitive for detecting small tumors. DESIGN Retrospective review of the medical charts of 58 patients with acoustic neuroma who had all of the data necessary for inclusion in the study. SETTING University-affiliated referral practice...
متن کاملMR of the normal and abnormal internal auditory canal.
MR performed with thin, contiguous sections has replaced CT for the study of the cerebellopontine angle and for diagnosis of acoustic neuromas. In our experience large acoustic neuromas are well seen in all pulse sequences. Tumors with small extracanalicular components are seen in the T1- and spin-density-weighted sequences whereas purely intracanalicular lesions are often visualized only in th...
