چکیده

In this paper we compare models and experiments involving Scout II, an untethered four-legged running robot with only one actuator per compliant leg. Scout II achieves dynamically stable running of up to 1.3 m s−1 on flat ground via a bounding gait. Energetics analysis reveals a highly efficient system with a specific resistance of only 1.4. The running controller requires no task-level or body-state feedback, and relies on the passive dynamics of the mechanical system. These results contribute to the increasing evidence that apparently complex dynamically dexterous tasks may be controlled via simple control laws. We discuss general modeling issues for dynamically stable legged robots. Two simulation models are compared with experimental data to test the validity of common simplifying assumptions. The need for including motor saturation and non-rigid torque transmission characteristics in simulation models is demonstrated. Similar issues are likely to be important in other dynamically stable legged robots as well. An extensive suite of experimental results documents the robot’s performance and the validity of the proposed

On the Stability of the Passive Dynamics of Quadrupedal Running with a Bounding Gait

This paper examines the passive dynamics of quadrupedal bounding. First, an unexpected difference between local and global behavior of the forward speed versus touchdown angle in the selfstabilized Spring Loaded Inverted Pendulum (SLIP) model is exposed and discussed. Next, the stability properties of a simplified sagittal plane model of our Scout II quadrupedal robot are investigated. Despite ...

On the Passive Dynamics of Quadrupedal Running

In this thesis, the dynamics of quadrupedal running via the bounding gait is studied. To analyse the properties of the passive dynamics of Scout II, a model consisting of a body and two massless spring-loaded prismatic legs is introduced. A return map is derived to study the existence of periodic system motions. Numerical studies of the return map show that passive generation of cyclic motion i...

On the stable passive dynamics of quadrupedal running

In this paper, we study the passive dynamics of quadrupedal bounding, based on a simplified model of our Scout II quadruped robot. Surprisingly, numerical return map studies reveal that passive generation of a large variety of cyclic bounding motion is possible. Most strikingly, local stability analysis shows that the dynamics of the open loop passive system alone can confer stability of the mo...

Dynamic Compliant Quadruped Walking

This paper presents a new dynamic walking controllers for quadrupedal robots with compliant legs. The algorithm implements a "walking bound" gait, (running bound without ight phase), requires only one actuator per leg at the hip, and commands a constant hip velocity during stance. The algorithm has been implemented successfully on our Scout II quadruped robot and has yielded stable walking for ...

On Passive Quadrupedal Bounding with Flexible Linear Torso

This paper studies the effect of flexible linear torso on the dynamics of passive quadruped bounding. A reduced-order passive and conservative model with linear flexible torso and springy legs is introduced. The model features extensive spine deformation during high-speed bounding, resembling those observed in a cheetah. Fixed points corresponding to cyclic bounding motions are found and calcul...
