چکیده

Recently, the research on mobile ad hoc networks is departing from the view of stand-alone networks, to focus on hybrid self-organized network environments interconnected to the Internet. This type of networks is built on a mix of fixed and mobile nodes using both wired and multi-hop wireless technologies, and may be easily integrated into classical wired/wireless networking infrastructures. In this paper we design a lightweight and efficient architecture to build such a multi-hop hybrid ad hoc network, which will be used as a flexible and low-cost extension of traditional wired LANs. Our proposed architecture provides transparent global Internet connectivity and self-configuration to mobile nodes, without requiring configuration changes in the preexisting wired LAN. Differently from most of the implemented solutions, which are based on complex IP-based mechanisms, such as Mobile IP, IP-in-IP encapsulation and IP tunneling, our proposed system operates below the IP level, and employs only layer-2 mechanisms. We have prototyped the core functionalities of our architecture, and we present several experimental results to verify the network performance constraints, and how different OLSR parameter settings impact on them.

The Feedback Based Mechanism for Video Streaming Over Multipath Ad Hoc Networks

Ad hoc networks are multi-hop wireless networks without a pre-installed infrastructure. Such networks are widely used in military applications and in emergency situations as they permit the establishment of a communication network at very short notice with a very low cost. Video is very sensitive for packet loss and wireless ad-hoc networks are error prone due to node mobility and weak links. H...

A Hidden Node Aware Network Allocation Vector Management System for Multi-hop Wireless Ad hoc Networks

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...

Experiments of Ana4: An Implementation of a 2.5 Framework for Deploying Real Multi-hop Ad hoc and Mesh Networks

We consider the problem of interconnecting several hosts in a spontaneous hybrid network, i.e. an environment where wired and multi-hop wireless technologies are used. Dealing with the issues raised by such hybrid networks and addressing all the challenges listed in MANet may require a departure from classical solutions available in the literature. To enable a full multi-hop connectivity withou...

A Layer-2 Framework for Interconnecting Ad Hoc Networks to Fixed Internet: Test-bed Implementation and Experimental Evaluation

It is widely recognized that a prerequisite for the commercial penetration of the ad hoc networking technologies is the integration with existing wired/wireless infrastructure-based networks to provide an easy and transparent access to the Internet and its services. However, most of the existing solutions for enabling the interconnection between IPv4-based mobile ad hoc networks and the Interne...

A multi-gateway-based architecture for integrating ad hoc networks with the internet using multiple Foreign Agents

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are typically considered to be stand-alone autonomous networks that support multi-hop communication without relying on an existing infrastructure. The integration of MANETs and the internet extends network coverage and facilitates hybrid wired and wireless networking. Most earlier approaches, for integrating MANETs with the internet considered fixed gateways and ...
