چکیده

networked handheld devices to enhance school learning. In Abstract Handheld devices, especially networked handheld devices, are growing in importance in education, largely because their affordability and accessibility create an opportunity for educators to transition from occasional, supplemental use of computers, to frequent and integral use of portable computational technology. Why and how might these new devices enhance school learning? We begin by discussing a simple but important factor: networked handhelds can allow a 1:1 student:device ratio for the first time, enabling ready-at-hand access to technology throughout the school day and throughout the learner's personal life. We argue that designers need to understand the capabilities of the new generation of handheld computers and wireless networks that are most relevant for learning. We follow this with a discussion of Learning Science theories that connect those capabilities to enhanced learning. The capabilities and features feed into design practices. We describe a set of example applications that are arising from the capabilities, theories and design practices previously described. Finally, we close with a discussion of the challenge of scale.

Designing collaborative, constructionist and contextual applications for handheld devices

This paper explores current applications for handheld devices and questions which of these make full use of the unique attributes of handheld devices in order to facilitate learning in a pedagogically sensible manner. In order to do so, the paper presents a functional framework which analyses handheld application in relation to their use as well as the pedagogical underpinning, if any, that inf...

In the palm of your hand: supporting rural teacher professional development and practice through the use of mobile phones and other handheld digital devices

Given the huge growth of mobile phone access in Sub Saharan Africa (Minges, 2004) some of the most innovative uses of mobile devices are now to be found in the development context (Economist, 2005). Reviews of the use of mobile technologies point to a range of current and potential development for learning in classrooms, homes and the community (e.g. Naismith et al). This paper draws on the exp...

MUSHI: A Multi-Device Framework for Collaborative Inquiry Learning

We present the MUSHI (Multi-User Simulation with Handheld Integration) framework, which was designed to support middle and high school students in the acquisition of scientific concepts rooted in complex, multi-scalar phenomena. In designing a learning environment that is conducive to collaborative inquiry learning, we have combined a dynamic simulation with wirelessly-connected handheld device...

Designing a Self-contained Group Area Network for Ubiquitous Learning

A number of studies have evidenced that handheld devices are appropriate tools to facilitate face-to-face collaborative learning effectively because of the possibility of ample social interactions. Group Area Network, or GroupNet, proposed in this paper, uses handheld devices to fill the gap between Local Area Network and Body Area Network. GroupNet is an independent network where all members a...

HCI for technology enhanced learning

The involvement of technology to support and enhance learning is ever increasing; for example moving from the traditional blackboard to electronic whiteboards, from printed books to virtual reality training simulations, and from class room meetings to (a-)synchronised meeting over the web with handheld mobile devices. These technologies promise improved efficiency for traditional ways of learni...
